Yes, I know there are versions for other countries but everything in
this game is English. All speech is in English and the manual is in
English and the box front and back is in English. That usually means the
game was meant for an English market, and in Canada, we usually get the
same versions as the US market in every game that I can think of, that I
have bought since 1990. So yes, does seem strange to have Dutch only in
an English speaking game, and no other choices when everything else is
in English. The Dutch choice didnt anyway, so there were no subtitles in
the game I got, but I downloaded version 1.03 earlier as Nick mentioned
and automatically got English subtitles. There were no other choices,
though it said on the patch on Ubi site that the languages choices were
English, and Sparnish and Dutch and something else I think, but they are
not listed when I installed the patch. So presumably, the patch picks up
what version you are using and gives you that language.

On the version I got, it only mentions Dutch only subtitles in the menu
once you get into the game, and as I said, the Dutch subtitles don't
work. It doesn't mention anything on the box or small manual which came
with the game.

Did you play the CD Rom version or DVD Rom version?
The version I got is the DVD Rom version and says on the front of the
box "Exclusively on DVD" on the front of the box and says Ubi and its
for Win/Mac.. Its two CD's in a DVD Rom movie type case and the case
slips into a cardboard game box open at the top and bottom if you know
what I mean.. Games here are usually in small game boxes in a jewel
case. DVD rom games are not very common here. I've only seen a few now
and then.

I haven't gone very far in the game and stuck already. I need a
walkthrough. I notice in cut scenes that the picture is slightly blurry
for a couple of seconds off and on, when going through that scenery with
the young girl at the start. But in the game there is no blurriness.
Myst Exile wasn't blurred at any time or I would have noticed. Maybe I
do have a cheap version Smile Just kidding, I don't think the slight
blurriness is anything much. Maybe its just in the DVD rom version. I
wonder if anyone here played the DVD rom version?
The games with CD's of Myst Revelation by itself seem to be higher
priced though I've never noticed all that much. I've only seen
combinations of Myst 1, 2 and 3 on CD in one box.

When I get to that part, I will try to remember.

Well, you can't compare a weird family like those people. AT least I
hope not.
By the way, what game are you playing at the moment?

I checked on that, and Win 2K Professional version says the same thing
as Win XP Home editon - In SecDrv properties, driver, it says Automatic
or Demand or Enable or Disable. I set it on Demand. As far as I know, I
have no other games installed which use Safedisk. The only other game I
have installed is Darkfall 2. I don't know if it uses Safedisk, but I
don't know how I would know.

It seems to work on in Demand in Win 2K as well. I didn't try disabled.
It makes me wonder if SecDrv was already installed by default in Win 2K
Pro , like you said was the case in Win XP Home edition. It might even
be the same in Win XP Pro.

You could download A-Ray scanner. Or check at www.gamecopyworld.com
They usually list what so-called "protection" a game uses.

Sherlock Holmes: Secret of the Silver Earring uses Safedisc, as do Myst
III and Myst IV. Mystery of the Druids used an old version of Safedisc. I
don't think Dark Fall 2: Lights Out used any copy "protection."

SecDrv does not exist on my XP Pro computer. The computer has never had
any computer games installed on it other than those that came with
Windows. This is an "evaluation" version of XP Pro that came with a
networking course I'm taking, and I'm only using it for school. I wonder
if all versions of XP Home really come with Safedisc. My XP Home computer,
the one I use for games, would have had Safedisc installed with the first
game I played on it, so I can't tell whether Safedisc originally came with
it or not.

There's no such thing in my XP Home. (There is a whole bunch of
StarForce drivers in there, though. I count to seven. Luckily
they've not given me any problems yet.)

Check what's on your OS CD:
[WXHOEM_EN]:\i386\SecDrv.in_
[WXHOEM_EN]:\i386\SecDrv.sy_
(Replace the volumename [WXHOEM_EN] with stone-age "Drive-letter")

Some things to compare:
WinXP Home Edition Bundle
[un-]Localized English version
Service Pack 0 (SP0)
Files Dated: 2001-08-18 14.00.00

(Company-branded OEM versions of WinXP Home might be harder or
impossible to check out. Might even have come without a CD.)
(Maybe SP1 & SP2 versions of WinXP Home are different then the SP0 one?)

Currently on my working WinXP system:
SecDrv.inf ( %WinDir%\Inf\ )
- still the WinXP SP0 dated one here
SecDrv.sys ( %WinDir%\System32\Drivers\ )
- got updated with WinXP SP2 i think &
- other versions gets installed with various games
- so one might also have a backup version in
( %WinDir%\ServicePackFiles\i386\)

--
- Enquiring minds want to know.

Yep, I have those files. No entries in the Device Manager or listed in
the Service Manager, though.

Aha. Interesting, even though I'm not curious enough to do that.

(Starforce was listed under non-PnP anyway. We were talking about
SafeDisc.)

I think they have always been very careful not to tell you what copy
protection they use.
I just read Rikard's post about Win XP home has 7 Starforce drivers in
it (that he could find at least), put there when installing by default I
guess. If you are using Win XP Home (or maybe professional has them
too), don't you also have Starforce drivers installed right now? I don't
know a lot about copy protect drivers in games, but they wouldn't be the
same Starforce drivers which come with games would they? Don't games
usually provide their own copy protect drivers with the game?

You didn't tell me E-Cie, did you play the DVD Rom version of Myst
Revelation same as I have, or did you play the CD version.? I was trying
to figure out from what yuo said if I had a North American version which
I would think I have, but I was just curious from some of the things you
said that I might have some other version, though I've never seen any
here. The registration card which came with my game had a US address on
it to register. If it was a European versiion, I would think it would
have a European address for registration, wouldn't it?
If you played the CD version, how many CD's were there? The DVD Rom has
two. I think most people probably played the CD rom version. DVD rom
version is not commonly found. I didn't know it was even on DVD rom till
I saw this used copy. Never saw it in stores.

Safedisc should be listed under non-PnP too - possibly as secdrv.

After installing games perhaps, but not by default.

RHEM2 may have a CD check that was made specifically for the game,
but it is not StarForce or Safedisc. It certainly doesn't install any
hidden drivers the way they do. But I wonder if RHEM2 is your kind of
game. I thought you liked games with more characters in them.

Turns out I actually was curious enough. But the nonpresent devices
showing up now that wasn't there earlier are physical devices not
currently connected to my computer, such as my printer. I regognise
almost all of them. Only new things under non-PnP are Fs_Rec, RDPNP
(whatever those are) and vga.

Still no sign of SafeDisc.

No, no! Sorry I wasn't clear: Those were put there by games. (I have
not started boycotting StarForce games yet.) I have installed several
games on this computer since I bought it almost a year ago, and anyone
of those could have installed SF. I haven't really been paying
attention which ones did it, but I know that Virtual Skipper 3 uses
some kind of copy protection. It shows a "checking CD" window for a
long time before starting every time I want to play it. Annoying, but
Virtual Skipper is the only good sailing simulator there is, so I put
up with it.
