Personally I wish they had stayed on the path of Arena and Daggerfall.
I have tried a couple of times to get back into Morrowind, won't even
bother with Oblivion, and give up as nothing has changed. I loved the
fact that each game of Arena or Daggerfall was different. In Morrowind
the temptation is too great to go to a cave outside of Balmora, then go
to Vivec and talk to a person to get a reward of a Daedric Katana while
the character is still first level.
In Arena to find any artifacts you had to ask for rumors that would lead
to you talking to a person that would sell you a map to a dungeon. That
dungeon would have a map to another dungeon containing a random
artifact. I considered it a real coup to get the Ebony Mail in Arena.
In Morrowind, getting the Ebony Mail is no challenge. Also, Arena and
Daggerfall made improved items available as your level improved. No
finding suits of Ebony Armor laying around in dungeons, or adamantium
armor laying around unguarded in shops for first level characters to
"borrow". Shopping became a real task as you had to go to each store in
each town looking for the items you were looking for. A merchant might
have an Ebony katana one day when you didn't have the cash but would not
have it when you returned from the dungeons with the cash.
