I recently bought 2 Single Monitor Nintendo Playchoices, one is
completely functional, the other seems to have a problem with the
monitor. When the machine is powered on I can hear whats sounds like
the monitor powering up (the static noise), however there is nothing
displayed. I know this machine has been broken for a very long time
(since 1992), Included with my Playchoices was a brand new power supply
and a new motherboard, I've swapped both out so I know neither are the
problem. I've also checked the fuse on the chasis and that is also
fine. I have good soldering skills and have already made sure that I
know how to properly discharge the monitor. Are there any suggestions
on things I could do to troubleshoot the failed component(s)? Thanks
in advance.

Derek

PS I'm also considering selling the extra motherboard and power supply
if anyone is interested. This way if it's something I feel I can't take
care of myself then I can pay to have my local repair shop fix the
problem.

Derek:
I had a similar problem with an electrohome monitor. If you hear
aquadag charge when you power it up, that is a good sign , it means
you have high voltage on the anode of the crt. I had this and I heard
a good snap when I would discharge, but also check your screen voltage
and focus voltage.. In my case they were zero, These are not extremely
high so you shouldd be able to measure them with you miltimeter.
highest DC scale.
I had a problem with an open diode inside the Flyback and it required a
new flyback,, because they are all sealed up.
When I put a new flyback, I got screen voltage, focus and the set
worked again.
Good luck,
Dennis

Thanks Dennis, this is pretty helpful, I have a feeling that it's a
flyback problem, simply due to the fact that this thing has not been
used in 14 years out of its 16 year life, It's also been suggested to
me to get a cap kit, so I'm really on the fence as to what to do. I
don't want to spend $60 an hour for someone to fix it, then again I
don't want to waste money on replacing parts that don't need to be
replaced.
