Depends on the color and effect I'm going for. I do use GW's gold
and chainmail for really bright metallics occasionally, or as a final
color layer. Otherwise I tend to use Tamiya & Folkart mainly.
From Tamiya I go with 'Metallic Grey' (bright silver) XE-56 and my
favorite is 'Gun Metal' (a nice non 'day-glow' metallic gray) X-10. Gun
Metal sees a lot of use over black as a drybrush coat for all manner of
metal objects on my minis and is a personal favorite of mine. In
addition I like their 'Dark Copper' XF-28 and particularly their
'Copper' XF-6 which is excellent. In addition, I use their 'Hull Red'
XF-9 a lot as well. It's not a metallic color per-say, but thinned down
with water, it makes an ideal 'old rust stain' base coat. If you want
fresh looking rust too - just paint some brighter orange over the top
and Bob's your Uncle.
When it comes to other metallics - Folkart acrylic brand metallics (I
get mine from Wal-Mart the evil empire) really surprised me. I tried
them expecting more than not to dislike them. Instead I was pleasantly
suprised to the contrary.
Probably my #1 favorite is '666 Metallic Antique Copper' which I find
ideal for that 'heated metal' look, and as an undercoat / basecoat on
'old metal' surfaces. I drybrush it over other metallics when I want
the heated metal look - like on the exhaust pipes on a dread or the
business end of a multi-melta. Otherwise I use it as a first coat over
black followed by lighter coats of other colors when I want the 'aged
metal' look. In addition I use their '664 Metallic Copper' along with
'658 Metallic Antique Gold' a good bit as well. I'm not that fond of
their regular gold color (Hence GW's still sees a bit of use) nor of
their '676 Metallic Inca Gold' (which I find rather pastel in
appearance). FolkArt's '662 Metallic Silver Sterling' is also good and
excellent in terms of price if you have large surfaces you want to paint
a shiny metal color. And all being acrylic, they can be mixed and
blended with other acrylic paints (metallic or otherwise) to form
additional blends.
Hope that helps,
Myrmidon
