I leveled my character to 300 herbalsim, and gave it up, and just
finished leveling mining to 300.
In my humble opinion...
Herbalism is easier to gather, the herbs seem to be more plentiful,
except the really good ones, like gromsblood and plaguebloom - those
take some looking.
I did okay with herbalism, it's a steady paycheck, and most zones have
enough nodes that you can pick up a few no matter what you're doing.
Alchemists need a steady supply of herbs, and most alchemists I know in
my guild buy their herbs. Find outwhat potions are in the highest demand
(agility for battlegrounds, for instance, healing pots always sell, as
with mana) and stock for that market.
It took my level 60 about 8 hours to level to 300, starting from zero.
Mining is also a steady paycheck, seems to be a lot more actually, as I
find a LOT of mithril nodes, and mithril bars sell well. Thorium too,
but I'm hoarding mine for our guild.
Nodes are MUCH harder to find. It's a lot more work to find some good
farming spots for rich thorium, and I've had a lot of competition for
them. Again, blacksmiths need a steady supply of ores, you'll always
sell your stuff. The margin seems to be thinner on my server than
herbalsim, but since one node can pay off with 4-6 ores, your packs fill
up quick.
The payoff can be a lot bigger, as nodes can also contain gemstones like
lesser moonstone, black vitriol, and other gems that blacksmiths need.
And...you can get really big paydays, like the vein I hit last night,
that rewarded me with an arcane crystal (19g), an Azerothian Diamond
(6g), a Huge Emerald (5g), and the thorium ore. Not a bad payday.
Dark Iron Ore also sells well. I've been running into a lot lately, I
have 3 stacks, also saving that for our guild.
It's taken me two weeks to level to 300.
Sooo...in my opinion...I'd say either one, really - they both pay off,
but mining takes more work, but level 300 does pay off big.
Words of advise:
If you're going to have two gathering skills, raise as much money as you
can, and buy the biggest packs you can, and as many bank slots as you
can, as all 3 need large amounts of space if you want to stockpile -
some herbs are better to sell in complete stacks, singles and 2s and 3s
don't sell as well. My bank and bags are stuffed with stuff from ZG,
Blackrock quests, potions, poisons, what have you. Two gathering skills
will pay for this in no time. The new herbalsim bags in 1.10 will
definitely help.
Get a mod for tracking nodes - I use Gatherer, and it's a must. It will
track all your known nodes, and show them on your mini map and your big
map. (Your alts can use this data too - so you could level herbs to 300,
give it up, and if an alt takes it up, they will have all the nodes
mapped out for them, makes it a lot easier to skill up)
Get some auctionhouse mods to track prices, and the one that i con't
think of right now that remembers your prices, so you don't have to
remember prices when you setauctions - when you have 10 stacks of
something, this helps a lot. Keep an eye on prices - a lot of noobs or
impatient people will lsit stuff for pennies, just wanting to get rid of
it, or unwilling to research prices. I used to snatch up stacks of
Goldthorn because people did'nt realize how valuable it is.
Every once in a while someone will get an arcane crystal and not realize
how valuable they are, and list them cheap - they don't last long, so if
they're more than 3 gold less than current prices, buy them and relist
them. I've made some good profit that way.
Just remember, you'll be competing with professional farmers for the
high end stuff, and they will occasionally undercut your auction
severely. Just take it down, and wait it out, or buy them out. Or, if
you're lucky, undercut a frequent seller enough, and they'll buy you out
- less profit for you, maybe, but hey, it sold.
And, have fun with it. I can make 100g in a week just selling mats and
playing the auction house.
