Post subject: Myst Masterpiece Edition lock up problem
Archived from groups: alt>games>myst (more info?)

This is my first time visiting this group, so I hope this isn't an
old question...

Like the original, Myst ME first starts with you on the dock on
the Myst island. The entrance to the underground 3D viewer chamber
is to your left (away from the water).

When entering that 3D viewer chamber, my system completely locks up!
The mouse, keyboard, everything is dead. I can't get back to the
desktop, I can't even eject the CD (the button on the CD drive).
Only a power reset clears it, and of course then Windows complains
about not shutting down properly.

The game seems to work fine otherwise--just so long as I stay away
from that one chamber.

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

I talked to the tech help on Ubi's website, but after a bit they
gave up on me. Sad The last thing he suggested was that I upgrade
my computer and buy the 10th Anniversary Edition. :/

I'm running Win 98, 400 MHz AMD K6-2, 128 MB. Video is the Diamond
Stealth S540 Xtreme. Sound is Creative SoundBlaster 16 PnP. I was
using DirectX 8.1, but just upgraded to 9.0c (didn't help). It
meets or exceeds all the required spec's, but not by *that* much.

I've played the original Myst, Riven, and Exile all with no trouble.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My experience(sp?) is that this type of total hang/lock up of the system
happens when the hard drive is damaged. The game files used for the chamber
probably recides at the damaged disk area; Whenever the system tries to
access the damaged disk area this lock up happens.

If this is the case, you should be lucky that it's just the game that is
damaged. Next time it might be some more vital system files, or the MBR.

Or, it might be something completely different Smile

I had exactly the same problem in the same location with Myst Masterpiece -
but it was an oldish low-spec computer.

Well, that sort of kills the "bad-spot-on-the-disk" theory.

So, what happened, did you ever find out why?

I have the same problem however I'm using a new dual core 3800+ PC with
3 SATA hard drives so it shouldn't be the hardware. I also installed
Quicktime Alternative and I still get lock up. I may have to buy
RealMyst as well.

I'm also having difficutly getting back to saved games. Everytime I
open in a saved file the game starts at the beginning so I have to
configure all the puzzles again. Any suggestions on how I can get to
where I left off(saved) would be most appreciated.
The combination of having to start from the beginning each and every
time I start, then get lock up is driving me to throwing this game in
the bin.

Hmmmm... Quicktime Alternative, huh... I'll have to look into that.
Thanks.
