Maple Story is just another Korean Grinding Game(tm). It doesn't
compare to WoW in any way other then they are both RPGs. If you like
that style of play then I recommend Ragnarok instead. There are plenty
of private servers. >> Stay informed about: Anyone tried Maple Story? |

You might also want to be aware of the intrusive 'anti-cheat' software that
comes with both games.

Needless to say, I won't be playing *either* of these games until the
server admins smarten up. The class-action suit Sony received over a
certain CD-based rootkit should be considered ample warning. ~}:^(

Maple Story? That's the game where you press the CTRL key. Which is
all I seemed to do for the first few hours. People said it fun once,
you get a class and skills. Put having to auto attack up to it, bored
me to tears.
It is nothing like WoW. If you want a free version of WoW, try Shiaya
or Perfect World. Or wait for Mythos to come out. >> Stay informed about: Anyone tried Maple Story? |

Is this only on the official servers ? I played Rag on a few private
servers and I don't recall any third party installations. I also
played Maple Story awhile back and I didn't notice any adverse effects
on my computer then either. But then again, I never tried to cheat. >> Stay informed about: Anyone tried Maple Story? |

I was answering the question, "> Why should anybody want a free
version of WoW?"
I was not suggesting I'd trade the current pay-to-play for a free
version or private-server version that comes with XX limitations,
adware, decreased servers/maintenance, etc. Likewise, I pay for my
music/MP3 service for the same reason: It's worthwhile to me when
compared to the alternatives.
Still, if either was offered free IN THEIR CURRENT STATE, I'd prefer
that. >> Stay informed about: Anyone tried Maple Story? |

Except that very few things come without cost. You may not be paying money
up front, but somewhere along the line there will be an attempt to part
you from your money. If I remember correctly, Maple Story makes use of the
micropayment model that charges you in small increments for in-game
equipment, supplies and power-ups. Other games and game services that
purport to be free are supported by advertising, or charge for the client
and local software upgrades. It's never really free.
There's also the more nebulous issue of perceived value. If this game is
so great, why are they just giving it away? Even the most frugal among us
will stop to ask what the catch is if a game is being advertised as
'free.' The experiences I've had with free MMO games suggests that I'm
better off paying my ten bucks a month for regular patches and the
reasonable assurance that the server will be there next week.

Why should anybody want a free version of WoW? It's the best game I ever
played, and is well worth its money. I won't say I'm rich, but I am well
paid.

I downloaded the WoW client and connected to some of those free
servers you can find out there, but the experience was not that
stellar. Many quests were broken, so that killed it for me. I guess
if you just want to do PvP then it's ok, but to me, I'd pay $15/month
for quests that work (well, for the most part)... now, if only I had
liked WoW for more than 3 months >> Stay informed about: Anyone tried Maple Story? |

MMO games fit into the service provider model of software, where the
seller gets to determine how and when you can use it. Some years ago I
expressed a specific fear that ALL games would be distributed using this
sales model at some point, meaning your credit card would get charged 25
cents every time you wanted to play Pac Man on your phone. I was also
afraid that it would kill retro gaming, in that publishers would restrict
or otherwise hold back games based on licensing or royalties and not on
real demand. Try playing Planescape: Torment in *that* environment.
Of course, then the rogue Ultima Online servers started going up and I was
proven wrong. Even if there's a server-side piece of a game that never
gets into the hands of the consumer, if people like the game enough
somebody out there has the wits to duplicate it. I imagine that as soon as
desktop machines get powerful enough, the pirates will install Everquest,
UO and WOW server emulators on all their machines as a matter of habit.

Most ppl's desktop gaming PCs are more powerful than mmo providers' server
lol! All those boxes do is crunch numbers & run databases of sorts - no need
for graphics, multimedia or any kind of peripheral support. I wouldn't be
surprised if WoW servers run on some flavour of Nix. Then again no, with the
amount of farking downtime (8hrs again last night from 8pm prime time here!)
it must be Windoze heh.
All you need is a rack-mounted box with a decent bus, lotsa mem & a
relatively fast cpu, which describes almost any dual/quad core server these
days. 5 grand a pop down under. With 230+ logical servers last count, which
could mean 1000s of actual boxes clustered, I doubt Buzzard would go for top
of the line servers. Better to invest in solid midrange-upper midrange &
make them disposable. At 1.2 billion net a year I don't think infrastructure
is a big concern .

Right now gamers sometimes complain that there's not enough
gameplay. If it was pay-per-use I can see them start to complain
that there's too *much* gameplay in some of them
