There's this secondary zone, levels 10-20 or so, the island north of the
Draenai starting island. My map ("M" key) is mucked up, with the
south-eastern part of the map repeated twice. It looks silly.
Anyone else have a similar bug? I've never seen anything similar in any
of the other zones.

I have this same bug, but I haven't seen any others--yet.

Most likely an addon issue. If you're running any addons, delete and
reinstall them, which is what Blizzard will tell you to do anyway. >> Stay informed about: Map bug |

I don't mind losing my Auctioneer data (much of it is from last year
anyway - it'd probably do me good to get rid of it and start over from
scratch), but if I delete and re-install Gatherer, will I lose its data?

I'd try disabling all of them first (add-ons from the character screen) --
if the problem goes away, start adding them back one-by-one until the
problem comes back.
Add-ons are supposed to put their data under a different directory (the WTF
directory under the main WOW directory), so deleting the (non-blizzard)
files under AddOns shouldn't cause you to lose anything. Since Gatherer
works this way, the data will still be there.

The data addon's create is supposed to be created in a different
folder, so if you just move them from the /Interface/Addon/ folder to
see if it helps, you can move em back and the data should still be
there unchanged.

It seems to do it for some things for me but not others. I had one
addon that would lose it's settings if I disabled it from the
character screen and then logged in with it disabled. Was very
annoying because I would log in with it disabled every patch day
because they untick the load out of date addons checkbox.
That was just after WoW 2.0 came out but before TBC. It was so
annoying I found another addon to do the job and ditched the old one.

Nope, WOW deletes data for addons you no longer have installed (or at
least it did prior to 2.0).
Just rename the wtf\useraccount folder and the interface folder instead
of deleting.

That does not seem to be the case with my installation. I still find the
occasional <long_since_removed_addon>.lua files under SavedVariables.

A good recommendation in any case

I disabled all of the add-ons. The bug is still there.

I wasn't using any addons at all when I first noticed it. I just ignore it,
as it doesn't seem to influence the game at all.
