I spent hours making a face I liked at the end of the sewers/tutorial, and
after about 2 days (literally, took me 2 days), I finally had a face I could
live with. But the skin tones are not right. I mean, in low light in the
dungeons, he looks fine. Like a real person. In his paper doll he looks fine
also. Even when facing the sun outside. But in the moonlight, or when he's
facing a certain direction, his face looks all splotchy, like someone took
that white powder make-up and just caked his face up. What gives? How do I
make his face all one tone? Or is it possible without mods?

It's difficult if not impossible. Maybe there's a mod that cleans up
the inconsistencies of the face-maker program, but I don't know of one
myself. Skin shade, texture, even-ness and consistency is not its
strong point, as you've noticed. I played with the sliders for hours,
and just gave up. I usually don't zoom in for a lot of vanity closeup
facial shots while playing anyway, so not a biggie to me. Although it
was mildly fun creating a face or two from scratch, the last 3-4 chars
I've made all resulted from the 'random' button... hehe. With patience
and a steady finger on the mouse-clicker-thingy, you can end up with
some interesting and not totally fugly faces.

It may be possible since some NPCs have even skin tones in all forms of
light, though to be honest it's not that many of them. Most of them are just
plain ugly, like Bethsoft just closed their eyes and made the faces without
caring much.
Tonight I'm going to try and perfect my character but I don't know how many
more hours I'm willing to spend on cosmetic appearance. The shape of his
face is to my liking, though. That took forever to make a decent looking
Breton. Now I wonder if I should have just played a Khajiit. No basis for
comparison except my girlfriend's cat.

The face controls seem really awkward, especially the way they
interact. Change something you want to change, and it changes a lot
of other stuff from what you did like to what you don't. It is very
frustrating. Some of the options sets are lousy, too (all the Khajiit
look like they are slobs coming out of a windstorm). My daughter is
pretty good at the controls, and when I can I get her to spiffy up a
character for me. Alas, even if you get one you like, there is no way
to save the template.

Thanks! I'll have to try this. One of the difficulties with setting
race in the sewers is that you have either poor light or bright
torchlight that distorts complexion. Being able to do this in
daylight would be nice. Not to mention being able to do it when you
wanted to spend time hassling with difficult controls instead of
wanting to spend time playing a game.

Jup, very nice. There is also a nice page out there that has some rather
pretty faces which can simply installed into a savegame... I never tried
it, so I can't say what the results will be...

To use the .fg files, you can use Focon:

Been away for a while & what a cool thing to come back to.

Thanks 4 links. Faces really are very nice.

Had been using wrye bash ( http://wrye.ufrealms.net/ ) to import faces but
didn't know about this one. New faces + utility for the ol' Obliv.
toolbox.

thx

Oh yes, there is. "bash" lets you import faces from
other savegames. Keep your
template" face in a savegame and store it for later
use.

Turn off Player shadows. This seems to result in pixilation and lower
facial texture images. Also add the natural faces mod.
