Post subject: Old Machine and New Machine - what version of C&C for LAN play?
Archived from groups: alt>games>command>and>conquer, others (more info?)

I have two windows machines in the house that I want to LAN play (not
internet) C&C type games with over a 100-baseT network:

1. Dell Inspiron 1.1ghz, 40gb HD, 640mb RAM, 16mb ATI video card, XP
Home SP2

2. Homebuilt with AMD 2.2ghz dual-core, 360gb HD, 1gb RAM, integrated
nVidia 6150 graphics (uses 128mb I think), XP Pro SP2

I remember really loving the original Command and Conquer when I
played it on a mac in 1996-97, the controlling of all the little units
with the mouse, etc. I was wondering if a LAN play version of this
existed out there and if it was still available, AND if it would run
under XP?

My wife and I would have a great time building bases and attacking
each other's fortresses. That's kinda what I had in mind.

I bought a cheap bin version of C&C last year called "generals" and
loaded it up on a machine at work (yes, we're slack) to discover it
was all 3D graphics and not as top-down. It immediately turned me off.

Is there a pre-3D version of C&C still out there that would allow LAN
play between these two machines? If not, is there a similar game that
has many of the same features that would be fun to play between these
disparate platforms?

Thanks!

A collection, "C&C the first decade" contains most of the games from
that era. I simply bought it to have an easier install compared to the
really ancient installations on the original disks.

As for lan play, it still sucks on some of the games. The easiest way
we got it working was simply downloading a "COM port emulator over
tcp/ip" and using that with all the early games. I don't remember the
name of the software but can dig it up if you are interested.

That's something I never even knew existed - thank you for the info.
Would this be the kind of thing you mean:

I have copies of "Dune 2000" which operates pretty much exactly like
C&C did, and to play it head-to-head requires a "null modem cable"
which I'm thinking this application could emulate.

After I give it a try, I'll let you know!

That's the software I use Smile

Apart from the occasional glitch when it loses connection (rare) it
works like a charm. Although I only use like once or twice a year I'd
gladly donate ten bucks but didn't see any easy way to do so.
