Okay, those are the short answers... that being said, 9th Edition is
generally regarded as one of the best Core Sets ever, and it includes
some powerhouse cards like Wrath of God and plenty of staples like Mana
Leak, Pyroclasm, Naturalize, etc. However, most Type 2 decks contain
only a third or much less 9th Edition cards. The reason for this is
that core sets are designed for newer players, and thus don't contain
some of the more complicated (and powerful) game mechanics. A Standard
constructed deck can pull the best cards from 7 different sets,
including 9th Edition.. and when Coldsnap comes out next month, they'll
have access to 8! I guess a good analogy would be putting together a
fantasy sports team -- can you make a better team if you draft players
from one team or from ALL of them? Now, keeping up with Type 2 doesn't
have to be ultra-expensive.. but Wizards does releases a new set every
few months, and it takes a lot of effort to keep up with a constantly
evolving metagame. If you're playing casually, stick with what you've
got and have fun! The game is supposed to be fun. Buy a few cards
here and there and have a blast! But if you're wanting to get into
constructed tournament Magic, start haunting your local shop, watch
tournaments and LEARN as much as you can -- to me, it's the format to
play
