It's quite apparent with the release of FSX that Microsoft wants everyone to
upgrade their hardware to get ready for Vista. I have a pretty reasonable
power machine (custom built) and FSX is still a little sluggish and window
transition is slow. I'm running a straight P4 2.8 Ghz processor. MS wants
everyone to go DuoCore with 512mb Video Cards. Won't be long now before
displays will come with their own memory for some reason. Oh how I remember
Flight Sim Ver 1 for the Commodore 64. Bad graphics but it ran very well
and was a damn good learning too to learn how to fly without all the other
fancy stuff thrown in. Every version thereafter has been a memory hog and
harder to master. I do like the additional aircraft though. Never have
mastered the helicopter though.
Since I have nothing better to do the rest of my life since I'm 100%
retired, instead of giving my money away, I suppose I'll just go out and buy
the best motherboard, memory, video card, and other toys for Vista unless I
opt to just do what I should have done years ago. Go buy a large MAC and be
done with it. I wonder how FSX will perform on a MAC. I don't think that
version is released yet, but it would be interesting to see how it performs.
Will MAC live up to it's name?
Have fun everyone and remember, life is only temporary, thank God. >> Stay informed about: MS Wants You To Upgrade Everything |

i know this'll be off topic but forget MS flight sim, after I got
X-Plane i never looked back, no stupid issues like you have with MS
stuff. besides if you upgrade to AMD you wont have the problems you get

Sorry but you don't remember too well. It ran at 1 FPS, exactly. It
was fun because it was all we had but I would hardly call that running
"very well".

Hi Old Sarge,
Somebody on this n/g, with an impeccable reputation, posted fairly
recently about this very point.
He had the latest Mac version, and said that FS9 ran flawlessly on it,
at exactly the same performance levels that he was experiencing under Win Xp
Pro.
Might be worth you doing a little investigating, mate!
Regards,
John Ward

You won't be saving any money, and you'll be buying nearly identical
hardware. And FSX won't run on Macs.
Microsoft has a vested interest in building software that requires
newer hardware, as it is very dependent on Intel, a company that wants
and needs to sell hardware. If Microsoft were to start writing
software that actually runs faster on existing hardware than its
predecessors, Intel and AMD might be very unhappy, and the next time
Microsoft needed a favor ...
Also, it's much easier to write bloated code than it is to write tight
and efficient code, and since new and useless features must be added
to every software release to provide a pretext for encouraging people
to buy it, bloat is the normal trend.

No Windows applications can run on a Mac.

Given the additional overhead involved on a Mac, I'd expect it to run
more slowly.

Don't ever say never
If he's got a newer Intel Mac, then he can run Win XP.
Besides, even for older Mac's there are plenty of emmulators
available. But I'm sure the frame rates with them will be in the
basement

He can run Windows XP directly, in which case it's not Mac OS, or he
can run emulation, in which case he's not running Windows XP or Mac
OS.

Hi Mxsmanic,
"...And FSX won't run on Macs"
EXACTLY what do you base that comment on?
I know for a fact that FS9 can run very well on a Mac, as I accordingly
advised Old Sarge.
I'd be very surprised if FSX can't run equally as freely on a Mac, but
you seem to want to offer unsubstantiated advice that would confuse Old
Sarge, who has made it very clear that he wouldn't mind finally getting the
Mac.......
Put up, or shut up, mate - give me plenty of well-reasoned specifics, or
piss off (please excuse my language here, everyone, but I've had more than
enough of this bloke, in his own right, and now he's offering bad advice to
someone who clearly wants only good advice...).
