Well, it helped in a way and hurt it in some other way.
First you had developers scared that the PC gaming world was doomed, as
piracy was rampant, console games were rapidly overcoming them, etc.
In fact we could see many well known PC game developers 'jump ship' to
the console world for more lucrative options. Then MMORPGs came and
changed that, as now you have games that not only cost $50 to buy, but
also $15/month and an audience much bigger than originally thought.
Also, a genre in which consoles just can't compete on even grounds.
The bad thing about it is... everybody jumped at that opportunity.
Just like it happened a few years ago with the Internet boom and later
debacle, it's happening as we speak with MMORPGs. Trying to grab a
chunk of that untapped market, seems like every single company wanted
to have their own MMORPG. What we're seeing now is that people are
getting fed up with them. People are getting tired of the same old
thing, as newer MMORPGs for the most part are not evolving, they're
just changing a few things here and there and calling themselves 'the
next generation'. Many are collapsing (EQ2, Auto Assault, Lineage 2,
SWG, etc.) while others are struggling to survive (City of Heroes,
Guild Wars, AO) and more will soon join their ranks. It's an
overcrowded market now.
I like MMORPGs but... do I really want to go taking my char from lvl 1
and slowly grind my way for months to reach high level yet again? I've
been through that several times, I want something new! but, are there
any companies willing to take a chance?
