Am I missing out on some amazing IF thing or is the group being coated
with spam every day.

Is this M15 important? What is it?

What do you mean "newsgroup software", are you using a different
program to read this?

I am interacting with this through Google.

Many email programs, such as Mozilla Thunderbird, incorporate Usenet
clients. However, your ISP may or may not be set up to allow Usenet
access. If it isn't, you can link to a free Usenet service. I use
news.aioe.org.

Thunderbird's Usenet interface isn't perfect, but it's better than Google's.

It's spam, or rather just vandalism. (Not trying to make money, just
break Usenet.) Some sites are blocking it -- I haven't seen it on this
newsgroup, although it's overflowing the filter a little on some other
groups.

9/11 did change everything. Since 9/12, the biggest threat to American

Google Groups is a web interface/gateway to Usenet. I'm accessing
Usenet "directly" through an NNTP server. Note that's there's no
central place called "Usenet"; it's a network of servers, and each one
syncs with its neighbors, so when you post something, it propagates to
all the others.

I'm using Thunderbird for that. Outlook Express works too. There are
dedicated clients too that only deal with Usenet access.

Some ISPs provide NNTP servers for free (the servers usually have a
hostname of news.name_of_isp.com or nntp.name_of_isp.com).

The one I'm using is free for everyone inside Greece (news.grnet.gr) and
it does spam-filtering (the MI5 posts you mentioned, or any other spam,
never showed up in this newgroup).

To get an idea of how "it looks like", this is a screenshot of
Thunderbird on Windows XP (I assume you're on Windows) currently reading
this discussion:

There are moderated groups as well.

Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet for the whole story. It's a
distributed network of sites and Google is just a small part of it.

Get yourself a favour and get a dedicated newsreader. That way you can
get a much more sensible user interface than google gives you.
