I believe someone here posted that you can get all of the Elder's coins,
even those of the opposite faction, because you only have to run into
the light beam and the NPCs won't bother you as long as you stay inside
the light beam.
Not true! I tried that out as an alliance at the Crossroads. My lvl 63
priest had three guards beating on her and two lvl 15's, one was a
hunter with a pet ghost saber. Kind of funny as they did little damage.
Got to /LOL /dance /wave a few times before I healed up and left.
I never did attack back, but for some reason I did go PvP.
BTW, you CAN get all the coins, a friend of mine soloed it as a level 69
Nelf rogue. I was impressed.

I'm not particularly fascinated by hunting down elders.
However, I have run every alt I have through the first
steps of this so they can pick up the Moonglade FP
for future use (its a little east of the party grounds).
The lowest level toons needed to be sent money for
the fireworks, but I think it was a good investment.

That's basically the very same thing I did. You can also have your
low level toons mark flight paths for future use, which as you said is
a good investment. However, toons lower than level 50 I believe can
only get clothes, you have to be a higher level for the other stuff,
and having played this game less than 2 months, I don't yet have any
toons at a level where they can get anything else besides clothes. As
for the Rep, you don't get Cenarion Circle rep, what you do get is
either Alliance or Horde rep points depending on which side you're
on. Those points go to all the groups in your faction, so you can
start earning points with a group you haven't yet encountered.
And on a side note, has anyone yet attempted to use this as an
opportunity to invade one of the cities of an opposing faction? This
looks like the one time the Horde would get a chance to invade
Telrassil and Darnassus if they were to organize enough people. >> Stay informed about: Lunar Festival, Elders quest |

Yup you can, and it seems this year they reward 75 rep each, where last
years were 50 rep an elder.

This is "gaf1234567890"s post from 2006 on the matter btw:
The Coins are gathered from "Elders" (neutral NPC's) that are placed
all around the world. You just have to talk to them and it doesn't
matter what faction you are, even if you're in the other Factions'
territory. Collecting each coin is worth 50 Rep a piece (Cenarion
Circle?), and they can be turned in for Fireworks, and Firework
Schematics (Engineering), as well as ceremonial Dresses and Food items.

I found out that when a toon gets the festival clothes, that toon also
gets a box which usually has fireworks. Those fireworks are not
soulbound and can be e-mailed to another toon. That covers the 8
fireworks requirement but that toon would still need to obtain the
larger firework clusters costing 1s a piece. At least it cuts down on
some of the cost. >> Stay informed about: Lunar Festival, Elders quest |

I mentioned the PvP thing because since getting my epic mount I always
have to ride through Crossroads to stir up the guards when I'm in the
area. I've never flagged before. It's a cheap thrill and I make a game
of seeing how many guards will chase me out the gates.
I like to fish out a few deviate fish now and then, so I'm in the area
often.
Any alliance level 50+ or so should be able to get the coin from the
Crossroads elder if you do so quickly. Hunters, dismiss you pet first or
go passive. LOL

Snicker. I think that's just an attempt to lure someone to their death in
an awkward place. You can get the coins in enemy cities, but you need to be
able to take a beating long enough to turn in the quest.
My favorite coin pickup is the one from the guy in thousand needles. Ride
up, get your ass kicked while turning in the quest, and then jump off a
cliff, using a parachute cloak to survive the drop. Note that both Skettis
cloaks have seperate cooldowns, that means anyone can have two free jumps
in a half hour, or three for engineers. *

60 for engineers every half hour now, they reduced the cooldown from
30 minutes to 30 seconds. I thought someone here (ScratchMonkey?)
was correct in predicting the severe cooldown reduction meant the
engineering helicopter (yet one patch away) would sometimes explode,
but it turns out they don't.
