I'm new to the game.

I am losing cities without a fight. Even though I have several riflemen and
or Longbowmen, the enemy seems to be able to ride in on a cavalry and take
the city. They are also able to capture my seige weapons easily.

Any ideas on how to prevent this?

Perhaps your cities have culture-flipped, and your enemy simply sends a
cavalry there as a garrison. Just a guess. Also, in Civ III siege weapons
have very weak defence, so they should never be sent out unrscorted. Well,
actually the same is true in Civ IV, but not to quite the same degree.

Seige weapons have no defense ability whatsoever. They are pure
offensive units--they'll improve the firepower of other defenders in
the city but by themselves they'll just be captured.
