More on leveling up - Because Oblivion has the roads protected by guards, it explains the lack of heavy monsters. A player could roam freely from town to town. The farther you get from the beaten path the more bad guys you should I really wish that Oblivion could..

Anyone using non-leveling NPC mods for Oblivion? - So I see there's a couple of mods out now that stop the NPCs from leveling with you, and instead use random levels. Anyone try them? I tried one, and was I'd rather have the NPCs with levels than have them random. Otherwise your..

I am a fighter. I do use heal and shield spells. I happened to come
to a place in Oblivion's gate that had two magic shrines one on each
side of a door to a tower. Inside there were two more very close by.

I tried a little experiment. I selected protect spell. I don't
remember exactly how much mana it took but it was around 10. I counted
the amount of times it took to advance in alteration. Because of the 4
fountains I could have done this forever without waiting.

I then selected the defend/shield? spell. The amount of mana it takes
is close to 18 or so. It takes the same amount of casts to level up.
This is very wrong. The best way to advance your skill is to use the
pussy spells. This is not only tedious and un-entertaining but a lame
way for the game to be designed.

It's exactly the same with other skills, too. A dagger takes exactly the
same number of hits to level as a claymore, though the claymore does
more damage. Buying and selling individual arrows gives as much gain on
Mercantile skill as trading in Daedric artifacts. This is because they
based their levelling system on the easy-to-measure 'effort used'
instead of the slightly more complex 'results gained', as early
interviews implied they were planning. It isn't a new complaint, though,
as this is how the skill system worked in Morrowind.

The advancement rate is matched to your current skill
level for that particular
skill. Just as training gets more expensive pr lesson
as you becomes more
proficient, the number of hits in order to advance
increases with higher skill
levels

That's certainly true, but what I was complaining about is that it's an
increased number of successful skill uses, but harder or more worthwhile
use of your skills counts for nothing. If a rat hits you for 1 point of
damage, this trains your armour skill just as much as if an elder
minotaur hit you for 100 points. Negotiating the sale of an extremely
expensive daedric item counts for exactly as much as selling one iron
arrow, when it comes to learning mercantile. This tends to reward
players for things that shouldn't really be encouraged.
