If you sneak up behind one you can use your blackjack to disable it. I
counted 18 hits to do one in. Awesome!

How are you able to do this? On the first whack with the blackjack, the bot
spins around and starts shooting...and he shoots faster than I can whack...

As long as you are behind it and it isn't aware of you. Get as close to it
and while keeping your finger on the W key start hitting it. You have to be
quick and don't stop or yes it will turn around. Cout'em, 18 whacks and its
out of commission!

Don't forget to tell him, while you're whacking the
'bot, it's movements are jerky. Plenty of time to
deal with it. Sword is about half the whacks, but
not as fun. But it is a fine way to attract attention.
When I saw your comment abouty the "W", I
had to think about that one. I forgot that's a
movement key. Long time ago, in a taffin'
place far far away, I began using the numerical
pad for movements. Mouse is in the left hand
for gaming. On the numerical pad, 2, 4, 6, 8
are used for direction movement, 1 and 3 used
to side step, 7 and 9 are for leaning, the 0 is
to jump, the . is to crouch, and the + is to walk slow.
The reason I programed it that way, is because
using what most games suggest, I found I had
a tendency to drift over a key. No fun getting
the snot beat out of you while continously hitting
the "E" key and wondering why I wasn't moving.

Wow that must have took awhile to get the hang of? I use the universal
standard for gaming on pc. WASD. Good thing about Thief is you can go to
Options, controls and configure the way you want to! I use C for crouching.

You use your left hand for mouse? I'm a righty. Always have my finger on
the W key even when not walking. Only game that ever used the arrow keys for
was Doom and that was a long time ago! Wore out 3 mouses (or is it mice?) on
Diablo 2. Click, click, click, click etc. All you use on Diablo is the mouse.
Sad

About attracting attention by hitting the robot, usually clear the field
of guards before setting in on the bot. This must drive the "ghosters" nuts
now. But hey they will kill you at a glance so why not do them first!

Being ambidextrous has some advantages. I was
corry fisted until my senior year in high school.
Smashing your hand is not a good thing to do.
Had to learn to do a lot of things right handed.
I can now pick my nose and scratch my butt at
the same time !

He he he. You don't want to use the blackjack on the gold ones in "The
Mystic Estate" mission. They explode!

This thread reminds me the time I had a group of Hammerites and Combat
Bots fighting each other. Guess who won. It was the hammers because
their weapons are bash stem based (the blackjack also has this but the
intensity is weak). It was funny to see that group of hammers just
hammering down the Combat bot. Razz

I have all the fm missions have played listed in a book. Mystic Estate I
put a very hard sign beside and the number 0407. Gonna go and play it again
cause you know our fm memory is about 3 days. Smile

I can't get on with the ol' WASD nonsense either. The keys aren't
exactly in line. The w is not right above the S!

Myself, I use the cursor keys. Up for forwards, down for back, and left
and right keys take care of strafing duties. This is what I'm doing for TVery HappyS

ctrl/shift for sneak/walk. 0 on the number pad for crouch, mouse wheel
for right hand items, delete and insert (above cursor keys) to scroll
through left hand items. return to use a left hand item. 1 on the number
pad for jump. 4&5 on the number pad for leaning. square bracketss "[" &
"]" for zooming in/out (old habbit from playing F18 Interceptor on the
Amiga 500.. showing my age there...).

I think that's the lot.

I find using the cursor keys handy as there are a bunch of other keys
around them that are far enough away that you don't hit them by
accident, but conviently close enough, all arrange in arch around them
cursor keys for all other functions.

Dont' expect many other people to get along with it though.

Daniel.

Hate the WASD. Fingers can drift over one key, then
you're in trouble.
Been using the number pad for years, mouse in the left hand.
0 for jump, . for crouch, + for walk, - for sneak, 7 for lean left,
9 for lean right. / for lean forward

With most new games in the last 5 years they are standard WASD for
movement. It blows away the arrow or number keys by far. For Thief 2 they
used it also. I think Half-Life was the first to use them but maybe wrong.
For Thief 2 I made the W the run key and shift the walk key. Also C for
crouch and spacebar for jumping. Q for leaning left and E for right.

If you sneak up to a large robot with its back turned and shoot 2 water
arrows at it then it will become disabled also.
