I did some repair work on my nephew's PS2, and he offered up his old N64 as
payment. My kids love old video games so I grabbed it from him, but he
didn't have any games or memory cards. I took the kids to gamestop and I
was amazed to find used games costing as much as $15, while some were as
cheap as $2. My question is which games would you recommend as excellent or
must haves for N64, and is there a decent FAQ that describes the different
hardware options like memory cards and rumble packs?
Thanks in advance

What sort of games did you have in mind? If your kids like Pokemon I
highly recommend Pokemon Stadium II (not Stadium I) and Pokemon Snap.
Snap will be cheaper than Stadium II, but both should be available on
Ebay or Amazon or Half.com.
Otherwise Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie are nice "platformers", The
Legend of Zelda for role playing, Diddy Kong Racing for a car race.

The games are mostly for the kids, and they seem to like all kinds. I know
they bought pokemon snap, and they bought pokemon stadium, but I'm not sure
which one. thanks for the recommendations.

There were plenty of low-grade games published for the N64, as well as
some gems. The quality titles are worth something to collectors and
retro gamers, but most of the stuff isn't, which is naturally reflected
in prices.
My advice would be to stay clear of the really cheap stuff unless you
know what you are getting - some games can be quite painful experiences.
It's worth checking some review sites to find the cream of the the N64
crop. I have found that http://www.metacritic.com/ is particularly good
for this purpose.
My recommendations would be to get Banjo Tooie and Banjo Kazooie, the
Zelda games, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Star Fox, Goldeneye and
Perfect Dark (provided that those game genres are your cup of tea).
And an excellent source for N64 hardware and game information is the
GameFAQs site:

There's an older game called Rocket Racer. It gets challenging at points but
it's basically g-rated.

Games I really liked on N64 are Mario Golf, Smash Brothers (great group
fighting game), and Snowboard Kids I & II.
But the number one game for me was Mario Kart. That game was so fun, many of
the colleges kids I came across that had N64s had that game. And it's four
player, so it can be had by the whole family.
Cheers,

Don't know if it was brought up but...
Look for a Controller Pak and not a memory card. Nintendo called their cards

I haven't played it much, but the memory scheme is a little confusing.
There are memory cards, but it seems that some carts have the save right on
the cart?

Most of the major games had memory save space on the GamePak itself,
probably 80% of my games have this. The smaller third party titles required
the controller pak, and this seems to have been done to save publishing
costs.
When I bought my N64 I was advised by the games shop assistant to just buy a
Datel controller pak to save money. All of the froups have told me what a
bad move 3rd party memory paks are, but my own experience of them is
different, and I've had no problems at all with the Datel card. Or the
Toys'R'Us one for the GameCube. Oh the joy of being called a lucky fool by
the other froups. >> Stay informed about: Kids just got an N64 |
