I was unable to run Star Wars: Empire at War after installation on a new
machine. The game simply failed to launch, and no error messages were
generated. A little digging led me to the technical support site at Securom
, where the helpful staff revealed that their anti-piracy software is
incompatible with the KB917422 security update. I'm guessing that other
games that use this software will likely fail as well. Securom currently has
no fix for the problem, and I'm not about to uninstall a critical security
patch on an internet-connected machine, so I guess I'm out of luck for a bit.
Microsoft mentions a hotfix for this problem in the KB, but I don't know how
to obtain the hotfix without risking support charges (can anyone help?) and
may have to wait for a newer patch to fix the problem.
