Logged on this morning after the usual server maintenance, and had a nice
big update... Once I got in, the motd popped up announcing 10 was live...

Looks like it's time to fight some aliens, eh?

So that was what that update was about last night. 10 minutes after I
logged on there was a general anouncement about the servers shutting down.
That sucked.

My lvl22 Corrupter will get cleaned out with this event. Guess I need to
jump back onto my Lvl50 Blaster and PB.

Any word on how long we will have to live with carpet bombings and invasion
forces?

And the 'event' is supposed to last two weeks, but whenever someone does
Lady Grey's TF - successfully doing mission 5 will spawn another random
invasion.

So they should taper off...but be part of the game from now on until Lady
Grey disappears like the IP TF that moved the story along.

If it's any consolation, according to the patch notes there will be
*no debt* for outdoor deaths in a zone during Rikti bombing runs.

I'm excited to get in and check out I10 but after the update, I can't
get in. I get to the server selection screen and I click a server
(infinity or victory) after a bit i get a pop-up error box saying
"Can't connect to DBserver" [ok] and then it brings me back to the
sign-in screen. Does anyone have any ideas?

The zone invasions are really intense. Lotsa stuff porting in. I think they
set it so the ritki are the same level to everyone. Minions are white to
everyone, LT's yellow, etc.

I really like the new Ritki artowrk too.

Check your firewall settings... Even though I've set Norton to "always
allow" the coh.exe program, every single time an update comes around, it
asks me again if I want to block the program... The one time I didn't click
the approval (it was stuck in a background window behind CoH), I got that
exact same error message.

Hopefully it's just something simple like that.

It is rather nice.

Unfortunately, I can exist in a rikti incursion area for about 90
seconds before they unleash Lagzilla on me.

Ah well, I can at least do the new rikti missions Shen mentioned doing.

Yeah, looks like they've worked on their armor since the last invasion.
That or their military hired a new designer.

But it's a cool change. The Headman Gunmen are particularly... XBoxy.

Wait till you meet the Vanguard Forces, especially the magic throwers.

I was in two or three scraps last night and it was amazing how little
lag I encountered. I think there must be some server hijinks going on
when they green-out the zone to help reduce the lag issues. Those
battles were as intense in entities and effects as anything I've ever
seen. Sorry your connection continues to plague you.

They're pretty cool - some recycled content, mostly using BP cave sets,
but the new Rikti base and temple stuff is just awesome. Parts remind me
of the alien temples in Predator vs. Alien.

Either we're one helluva tank/healer combo or the new Rikti are woosies.
Hardly ever had my health bar drop more than about halfway, and that was
taking on multiple +2-3 bosses. Maybe they're just weak on fire/smash
damage.

I was with a group of friends (5 total) and we blew through that kind of
opposition too. That only thing that gave my brute pause was the blades from
the bosses. Man they stung. But then Fury is a Def-based brute so if she
does get hit she gets hit for it all.

Hopped up on a near maxed rage bar, I dove into an entire mob by myself away
from the group. I popped a lot of greens before the healer found me but I
had the best of them already and would have won without the heals (but was
happy for them).

The invasions were crazy. Ritki dropping like flies. You blink and that
orange boss is gone. The big armor suits took some time to bring down
though.

I'm finding that everything up to Chief Mentalists is a cakewalk.
Chief soldiers are a bit tougher due to that heavy armor of theirs
seriously reducing my attacks.

However today I got a mission to go after some War Leader guy.

Unlike most Rikti, he gets to do his overly accurate and seriously
damaging sword attack every 3 seconds or so.
Being an elite boss he's also pretty much immune to knockdown so there's
no mitigation there.
Attacks ranging from 500-700 a hit and that's _after_ tough takes a
chunk off it.
The traditionalist Rikti chief mentalist guy I rescued in the room tried
to help - he got one shotted.

After getting killed once by him summoning lag (not kidding, everything
just stopped for no reason so I couldn't do anything) I decide to hover
out of his reach and chip him down with focus and Shockwave, since his
ranged energy attacks are much much weaker than his melee attacks. Ok
not really, they're 458 a shot, but he misses some and doesn't fire as
fast as he swings.

This results in death #2 as he summons up help in the form of a Rikti
Heavy Assault Suit - another Elite Boss which fires bursts of 3 shots,
each doing over 300 pts and each having a burn effect of another 37 or
so every second for 5 more seconds.

Since when do EBs get to summon other EBs for backup?
I'm guessing that at a higher difficulty (or a team) this would be an AV
getting a second AV as backup.

One of the reasons I like tiny personal firewall is that it does a
smarter variant of this.

It outright tells you that the exe has been replaced with another of the
same name and asks if you wish to accept the substitution (there's a
record of all applications MD5 hashes that touch the firewall.)

In the case of an update you expect it to have so you agree, if it
appears suddenly out of nowhere, it's likely to be infected with
something, so you don't.

Kinda figures that Norton would do it in a halfassed way that would
confuse the average user.
