Frightening Statistic - Hi folks - Heard something on the news I found this weekend, the world's will pass an estimated 6.5 Billion people. Meaning that the world's will have doubled since *1960*. 46 years. Yikes. This can't..

Ping: Miracle - Got the St Patty's day card and note book today. Thanks! The book looks great, and earned itself a spot on my desk next to the little container from Christmas (which receives lots of use)

I was Passing by... - Looooong time since I looked in here... A couple of faces (or names) are :)

Finally got around to reinstalling T1 - ... but for the life of me can't remember the variable to control FOV. 1440x900 is nice on it, but would like the extra vision.

Blogging, 4-04-06 - I'm a real piece of work, I'll tell ya. I bet I don't have three working memory cells left. I've spent the better part of yesterday and today trying to find my pen drive. Still haven't found it. I need the little devil so I can transfer some files..

Man, those whacky Iranians.

"We need reactors for peaceful purposes. We want to make energy."

A nuke over Israel is a lot of "energy", right?

It always has amazed me to read the stories of people who win the
lottery and become millionaires over night, and become poor again
almost as quickly.

I guess they sit there watching Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and
mentally work up a ridiculous shopping list. Not realizing that the
rich and famous always have an influx of more cash to maintain that
style of life.

Maintenance is the key word there. A large house is a moneypit to
maintain. A yacht or other similarly large boat also requires costly
maintenance.

People want to instantly retire. I would invest. Do a working
retirement, where my interests and hobbies could return a dividend.

But bet your ass I would have a no-compromises top-end PC! Very Happy

My mom's like that. She's pretty frugal but it seems like she feels guilty
at holding onto it, so she gives it away pretty quick. I'm constantly
worrying about finding myself poor so I save it away. She's constantly
throwing money at me, so I tuck it away for the rainy day when she's going
to need it again.

Buying a home out of a grocery budget is quite a trick.

We're currently being plagued by dozens of "Cheapest loan" adverts on
TV. Even some of the bigger banks have stepped in the arena.

"Getting E20,000 has never been easier! Get that kitchen you always
wanted, or that car!" People don't realize that 'loan' means 'debt'. It
does something awful to your creditrating for mortgages, too (we don't
have the Gestapo-like credit checks Americans sometimes get, but
outstanding loans are a big turnoff)

And saving money? Things are getting more expensive every year, and I'm
not talking about inflation. Health care insurance (mandatory, as
always) just got a fairly major price hike for most people. That was a
'prestigeproject' of some jackass in parliament. And then you are told
on TV that Dutch folk are saving too much money, they need to SPEND
SPEND to get the economy rolling again.

Yeah.

Yes. "A fast and easy loan based on hypothecary (hypotheek being
mortgage) certainty" as a rough translation. That means that if you
don't pay up, your house is forfeit, same as with the regular mortgage.

That's another thing. College costs about E1500 a year for tuition, and
(quite) a few hundred for books, here. It's a legal limit if you're in
the appropriate age bracket and haven't been there more than 10 years.
Schools get paid by the state when a student graduates.

That's affordable. I can pay for that easily with my job-on-the-side.
They wanted to double that. Lots of folks wouldn't be able to cough that
up as easily.

What's it cost in the US?

Don't you just love economic ignorance in the media? It's like ignorance
about science in general.

In this case, presumably they think that anyone who saves is putting his
money under the mattress, and removing it from the economy. I would think
that the Dutch are smart enough to *invest* their saved money, either in a
bank or stocks or bonds, all of which are various ways to loan the money to
someone *else* to spend. Lending is simply a way for people who are willing
to not spend their money immediately to get compensated for their
frugalness, while keeping the money productively circulating.

Yes; male also.

Well, my single data point doesn't help you then, I think.

Of course. Because "David" would make a funny girls name, Cpt. Morgan.
