Do the Ion Cannons (IC) realy function or are they just for looks??

I have had several enemy ship sitting over my HW and not a one has taken any
damage from any IC fire,

I have not seen any mention of any IC fire in any of the incoming messages.
So if they do not fire or cause any damage or protect the base at all, then
why are they in the game????

Same questions can be asked about the AA-Guns and Laser Cannons??

Additionally, Ion Cannons do not shoot, if you have an activated base shield.

I have 20 and enough ord and energy. I also have a base shield.

So I have to deactivate the base shield in order to have the IC fire??

Yes, you have.

But as long as your shield is active the enemy ships do not fire at your base.
Only fighters attack and your AA guns fire at the enemy fighters.
When the enemy fighters have destroyed your base shield your ion cannons start
to fire but enemy ships fire too.
