Post subject: An Invitation to the Lurkers
Archived from groups: alt>games>microsoft>flight-sim (more info?)

Having been around this newsgroup for quite a while, I know there are
sim pilots who contribute questions, answers and other types of
material on a regular basis, and there are other folks who enjoy just
reading whatever is contributed. The latter people are commonly known
as 'lurkers'.

There is nothing wrong with that, except it doesn't give anyone a
chance to know you and perhaps, gain something from that experience.
You don't need to contribute if you don't want to and if you do
contribute, it doesn't have to be something profound, or amazing as
long as it is civil because the participants in this group pride
themselves on being gentlemen as most pilots are. This does not
preclude the privilege of disagreeing with a post, as long as it's
done in a proper and polite manner.

Since this is a newsgroup which is devoted to Microsoft Flight
Simulator programs, we would expect any posts to be concerned with
Microsoft Flight Simulators, simulator flying, flying in general or
any other aircraft-related stories and/or questions as well as subject
relating to the equipment used to operate flight simulators such as
computer components/operation.

Once in a while, it's fun to read an 'Off Topic' post, which are
usually anecdotal, humourous, or at times, personal. If you choose to
make such a post, they must begin with the letters OT (off topic) and
all posts of this type must be in good taste, polite and appropriate
for this group.

To conclude, I invite anyone who is reading the posts to just say
'hello' so we have a better idea who you are. You may be surprised at
the feeling you get when you receive a 'hello' back from a sim pilot
somewhere around the world.

I don't think I could make up a name like 'Arthur', but my mom sure
did. She wanted to give me a name which would make me blend in with
Canadian society. That worked for a few years and these days, no one
can figure out how to spell it. I rather like the name, though, and
although my wife tends to call me Artie, I do prefer to be called
Arthur : )

By the way, old chap, you can advance my age to 65. Inasmuch as it
pains me to do so, it really does beat the alternative of deleting my
name altogether due to....mmmmmmmm.....involuntary absence.

Welcome to all those unknown souls who I know are reading my posts but
who choose to remain invisible. I, along with the rest of the crew,
would really like to get to know ya. If you choose to say 'hello',
tell us a bit about yourself, especially where in the world you're
located. This will give us another target destination we can fly
to : )

Hello.

I've been lurking (and simming) for about 5 or 6 years now, started with
FS2002. I did try joining in a couple years ago but one (un-named) person
didn't take kindly to my driving requirements and I when back to lurking. I
know, poor excuse, but that's what happened.

Anyway, I enjoy the group immensely. It's absolutely the friendliest groups
I've ever found interest in. Thanks to all of you for your expert help. Keep
it up.

I now run FSX on a new Vista 64 PC w/C2Q, 4Gb memory, and 8500 graphics
(apparently the 64 bit version doesn't like FS9, but I'm learning to live
with it Smile

have another Arthur which pleases me no end : )

My thanks go out to the group for being so gracious in welcoming these
folks....you are really a class act.

Welcome all you lurkers. Just because a few of us have known one another for
a long time and possibly appear to indulge in 'private' jokes must not make
you feel excluded in any way. All sim pilots are very welcome, as Arthur
'Snake eyes' has said. And how do we know his real name is Arthur? Well,
it's time I published our list of real names and hideouts again. Please add
yours if you feel able. It is completely voluntary. But if you do, please
type it in the same format as the others so that I can just cut and paste.
The number in brackets is your age!

Please send it without the long list attached, just your own input in this
thread - thank-you.

Hi All:

I'm a lurker to this newsgroup since around early 2004..
I've used MSFS since version 3 for the Tandy 1000TX in (I think) 1989.
I've been interested in flying since I was a kid growing up in Boston, MA.
I used to go to
Logan Airport to just watch the take-offs and landings and then in later
years to KOWD.
I'm 74 years old now and somehow just can't find enough time to sim as much
as I'd like.

In response to Quilly's post, my information is as follows.

Frank O'Halloran (74) Brockton, MA, USA about 7 miles SE of KOWD and 20 S or
KBOS.

I've enjoyed the newsgroup ever since I discovered it. Thanks for being the
group that you are.

Frank

And like you, I prefer "Arthur" to "Art" or "Artie" Smile

Thanks to you for the invitation and all for the welcome!

Wow.....I'm a happy simmer. I was just hoping for maybe one lurker,
but lo and behold, not only have we reached a few good ones, but we
have another Arthur which pleases me no end : )

My thanks go out to the group for being so gracious in welcoming these
folks....you are really a class act.

Hi Quilly,

I also have a wide-screen monitor (only 1) and everything was badly
distorted so fly only in window mode. I only bought the system a couple
weeks ago, especially for simming and was very disappointed at first. I had
it locked at 24 fps and only got about 4 to 12, which is why I tried
installing FS9 (that just wouldn't work). I've read a few posts here that
indicated changing to unlimited helped, so I gave it a try. I usually fly
"low population" areas and am now averaging about 30 to 60 fps (all sliders
but weather maxed...I want the eye-candy...but even with real-time weather
I'm getting 20 to 30). They will start lower near home (KJOT) but usually
fly AWAY from Chicago and they improve quickly. I'll have to give heading
into Chicago a try tonight and let you know.

Thanks,
ASB (Arthur)
