If I already own a game that's recently been offered through Steam, can I
uninstall and reinstall into my Valve folder to take advantage of auto
updates, file integrity checks, file defragging, etc?

TIA

On the main Steam window, click "Activate a Product on Steam".

I Googled this group and found no step by step instructions. So....Install
the game from CD's into ....steamapps/(my username)folder, then click
"Activate a product on Steam"?

There used to be an "activate a product I already own" link, but it's no
longer there.

Yes and double checked for accuracy. Clicked the button and entered the cd
key. Said it was an invalid key. It's not, because I've been playing the
game for 10 months. The game is COD2 by Activision. Bought it retail last
Christmas. The key is validated online every time I play MP. I was just
wondering if I could move it into the steam folder to take advantage of the
updates, defragging and file integrity. Maybe that would help with
occasional bugs like freezing and lagging.

Thanks for the help.

I'd e-mail Activision and Valve. It'd make sense to have it all in Steam.

It would have helped if you had mentioned the game before. Of course a
third party CD key like that won't work and it won't get updates. The
Steam CD key input is for Valve games.

COD2 isn’t distributed through Steam.

And they should be - imho

Hmm Looks like COD + COD2 *is* made available through Steam
Hard to admit one is dead wrong - lol

Look here:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=496667

seems many people are annoyed with Valve's policy of not allowing existing
retail CD keys to be used.
