my favorite device, my DirecTV TiVo has bit the dust--i've lost the
SAT IN 1. reversed cables and SAT IN 2 works like a champ. decided
to reset the machine, and now it won't boot 'cuz it can't get much out
of 1--too flaky. i can watch all my recorded programs, but can no
longer watch programs cuz it won't boot.
my question: when the dude brings me my new TiVo on monday, can i
make him/her take my old hard drive and put it in the new one so i
don't lose my recordings and my Season Pass? has this happened to
anybody else?
should i put it back together? i hacked it. the babe's about 4 years
old.
i'd appreciate any help/input.

Hopefully its just wiring from the Dish, cause they wont do what you
want, and if they were to replace your unit, it'd be with the
"new" nonTiVo R15, which couldn't possibhly work with a TiVo Hard Drive.
You can save to VCR in the meantime.

darn! so i'm hosed, i guess! i'm sure they won't let me keep the old
unit since it's a service call. i suppose i can ask??
it's not the LNB, nor the multiswitch as i've tested all the cables on
other DirecTV receivers and they all work.
now my question is, i purchased the instacake CD to modify my Hughes
HDVR2. you mentioned that they'll probably give me an "R15" (?).
does that mean i'll have to purchase ANOTHER instacake to hack my new
unit? (ARRRGGGHHH!)
thanks for you guy's inputs.

Sorry, no hacks available for the R15. No hacks likely anytime soon,
either, they're not nearly as lenient about it as Tivo is.

If he doesn't give it up, they may not leave the new unit they are swapping

DirecTV certainly doesn't want any TiVo boxes coming back. I've heard
many stories of DirecTV service people leaving TiVos and I've never heard
one story of them taking the box. The box doesn't belong to DirecTV, it
belongs to the customer. They have as much right taking the TiVo with
them as they do taking the TV.

What /some/ may practice is not policy. "swap"="trade". If it is as the OP
puts it, they are coming to "swap" his receiver, then they have every right
to take it with them. If they don't, good for him. But it doesn't change
the fact that they have the right to do it as that is what a receiver swap
is. Ownership of his TV has nothing to do with it as they aren't coming to
"swap" his TV out.
The new box they are going to "swap" with him doesn't belong to him yet. If
it is a "swap", then it doesn't belong to him until he relinquishes
possession of the device they are swapping it with. >> Stay informed about: Hughes DirecTV Tivo HDVR2--Lost Sat IN 1--Service Call on .. |

OTOH, last month DTV insisted (under threat of a hefty fine) that I
return my non-working HDVR2 when they sent me an R10 to replace it. >> Stay informed about: Hughes DirecTV Tivo HDVR2--Lost Sat IN 1--Service Call on .. |

the guy came, saw the HDVR2 was hosed (was kinda confused because i
had gotten rid of the BLUE screen), assumed that was also part of the
problem, didn't bring my replacement (as originally promised), said my
new DirecTV TiVo would be here by thursday.
and said, the old unit's mine.
i'll let you know what arrives by FedEx or whomever.
thanks for your input!

Without the access card (and an active one at that), the box is useless.
In Dr.P's example, he's swapping one TiVo for another which makes sense
for the word swap. The same doesn't apply when you toss the R15 in there.
