My little country of Northern Ireland usually doesn't have many
aviation 'incidents', but I had to laugh when this made it onto the
news.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7360357.stm
The Manx2 aircraft is what we call a 'Puddle Hopper' as it flies
mainly between Belfast City Airport and the Isle of Man (50 miles or
less). As soon as it's airbourne it starts making its descent.
When I first heard the headlines on the radio I thought my goodness an
'airplanes tyre explodes'.
Turns out it was only taxiing and FOUR passengers were onboard.
Its like reporting that I got a flat tyre reversing out of my
driveway ;-(

I believe you should turn that frown upside down and think what it
would be like to have, for example, a fully-loaded A340 fall into the
ocean a few miles offshore with no survivors as Canada experienced
with a Swissair plane a few years ago at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia.
We still cry when we remember it. Your country is blessed if all it
must report is a small aircraft sustaining a flat tire on a runway
with four souls aboard....

I'm not belittling real disasters Arthur and I certainly feel for
those who have lost loved ones in an air disaster.
When I got into my car at lunch time it was the first thing on the
news headlines as if it was so major compared to other stories that
sometimes blight our country. The headline didnt quite match the
danger level of the incident, thats all that I found amusing.
I guess your right, it is a blessing not to have a real disaster. The
media quite often exaggerates the level of danger when perhaps none
exists to an experienced flight crew.

Hi Ibby,
Thank goodness it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Imagine what it could
have been had the tire burst just before rotation, or right after
touch-down. Aircraft incidents and accidents are never a good thing, but
sometimes (not often enough) they happen just at the right time, where
no-one is killed or injured. Thankfully this was one of those rare times.
Take care...

I havent watched the video yet as I'm in work but feel a little
embarrassed as the article has changed. The original said the
incident happened on the taxiway which is not a major problem compared
to on the runway which I believe they are now saying.
I know all too well what can happen if a tyre explodes on takeoff,
just look at the Concorde disaster in Paris which was caused by a
strip of metal causing the tyre to explode and the tyre rupturing the
engine or fuel tank.

Ibby,
Probably nothing much happens at that airport and the fire and rescue
squad is usually bored - I mean, how many times can you wash the fire
trucks and inspect the surroundings for fire violations.
This gave them a chance for some 'real live' emergency training.

I forgot about that one
I guess with the peace process etc there' not much 'excitement' in the
news nowadays.
I didnt realise there was anyone else here from Northern Ireland.
There is one guy Ian Patterson who logs in now and again.
Where are you from? I'm from Ballymena (hey!) )

It was actually a McDonnell Douglas MD11, Arthur.

One of the things I had planned a few years ago during my visit to Scotland
was a hop to the Orkneys. The flight was just over 5 minutes.
I think they do it with a single prop Cessna.
Flight....flight of a golfball.
I thought this was so ridiculous that I opted not to go.
Next time I might actually go there, but I'll probably do it by boat.

Hi Ian,
I really didn't expect your name to pop up so quick
Did they ever find out what the 'lights' were over Bangor??
