Last year we had a thread in the group with the subject 'Sega sorta
Christmas' and I thought it'd be nice to revisit that theme. And to
improve the signal-to-noise ratio around here with all the MI-5 stuff
being posted everywhere...
Every year for the holidays I travel out west and visit Gamers, which is
apparently the mother of all used game stores. Locally owned with about a
dozen branches all through Nebraska and Iowa, they always seem to have the
stuff I go in looking for. This year I was looking to fill some gaps in
the 32x, Sega CD and Saturn collections.
Picked up a complete copy of Silpheed. This was the very first Sega CD
game I ever bought, but I never did have a manual and a case for it until
now. Also, it doesn't hurt that the copy I got doesn't have the game
ending scratch that makes my CDX reboot halfway through level three. I
should mention that the game is pretty well-coded, in that when it detects
a hardware fault of this type it sends you back to the title screen with
an extra continue. Good thinking, Game Arts.
I also picked up copies of the original Mortal Kombat and Pitfall: The
Mayan Adventure just to satisfy the collector's urge. I also grabbed a
copy of Dragon's Lair, which I sold many years ago for reasons passing
understanding. I didn't pay more than three bucks for any of these games,
which is surprising given that the Sega CD stuff is starting to grow in
popularity again.
On the Saturn front, I plugged a few holes in my collection without even
trying. Crusader: No Remorse fell into my lap; this is a horrible little
isometric third-person shooter that Origin slapped together out of the
Ultima VII engind. It's remarkable only for being more playable than the
Playstation version. I also grabbed a copy of Thunderstrike 2, a charming
little helicopter sim that's been screaming my name all year. I also
grabbed a half-dozen Crystal Dynamics shooters, mostly stuff ported from
the 3DO. One of these has a young Claudia Christian screaming orders at
you in the FMV segments. Cool stuff.
And because I'm a glutton for punishment, I grabbed some one-dollar 32x
games as well. NFL Quarterback Club '95 was hardly worth the effort, but
apparently NBA Jam TE has some collector's value with the box and manual.
Hooking up the 32x (and forgetting that it doesn't do stereo sound)
prompted me to pull out the rest of the library and spend a nice evening
with Star Wars Arcade and Virtua Fighter, which are a lot more fun than I
remember them being.
So. In the American spirit of applying improper adjective modification,
how Sega was your holiday?

You know, I thought there was something different about the game. I was
never a big Mortal Kombat fan (SF all the way, baby) so I never knew the
difference. Even though it was a pretty glaring omission in the
collection, I don't see myself playing this a lot.

The Saturn was the first game system I bought with my own money, so it's
sort of special to me that way. That, and the import games are flying out
of Japan cheaply and in high quantities. I'll buy dog food if it has the
Saturn log on it.

There's an FMV game on the 3DO called Daedalus Encounter that has Tia
Carrere in it. The stupid premise is that you're a severed head in a box,
and that you can see what's going on around you but you can only interact
in limited ways. I think that was the game that finally clued people in to
how dead the FMV genre was on the long run. Anyway, Tia Carrere.

I'm a little bit late, but thought I'd share my Sega-related Holiday
experiences as well.
Thanksgiving I was able to dust off the dreamcast out of storage and
give it another go. Unfortunately, I was short on time, and couldn't
get to where most of my games were stored, but was able to try out one
of those games I bought back in the day on clearance, but never opened
yet. That game was Tee-Off golf. Although nothing too impressive, it
was a fun diversion and just spending some time w/the Dreamcast (still
my fav system) brought back lots of good Sega memories. Back to golf,
I still love Neo Turf Masters (might not be the correct title) on both
the Neo Geo and Neo Geo Pocket (ah, I miss that handheld as well. For
some reason, I've always associated it w/Sega ). Was thinking of
picking up one of the Hot Shots Golf games. Any thoughts/reviews on
those games?
For Christmas, I found myself a cheap copy of Outrun 2006: Coast to
Coast for the PS2. I gotta say, my expectations were pretty low for
this game, but I've always wanted to try it. And WOW. I just love the
game. I love the graphical style and gameplay. It just screams SEGA
Hearkens back to the glory days of Scud Race (ah, how I wish that was
ported to the Dreamcast) and Daytona. I just love the overall look/
gameplay and experience.
It's one of those games that's great to power on when you have a spare
10-15 minutes (as you're running out the door and/or waiting for your
significant other) and just powerslide all over the place with that
great sense of speed and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Makes me totally regret the day when the 32x was on clearance, and
could be had BRAND NEW w/Virtua Racing (Toys R Us sale) for $20.
*STILL* to this day I haven't picked one up. But I have since picked
up Virtua Racing and Star Wars Arcade... Just need to get me a 32x
now
and then there's my new, sealed Panzer Dragoon Orta waiting for me to
pick up an Xbox. i really gotta stop buying games for systems I
*DON'T* have but plan on getting sometime in the future!
Ah well, that's all the Sega stuff I've got for now. Happy Sega New
Year!

Orta is on the backward compatibility list for the Xbox 360 now, although
it crashes after the third level. Hopefully that will get fixed when the
next BC update goes into effect in February. Unless that software change
gets delayed thanks to the Live network problems they had over the
holidays, but that's a complaint for a newsgroup I don't read anymore.

Let's see, specifically for Christmas I got Marvel Superheroes vs Street
Fighter for Saturn. Then I hit some cruddy little game store in
Colorado and picked up Pirates! Gold, Buck Rogers, Star Control and
Bonanza Brothers all complete for Genesis. After that, I found a much
nicer store called Game Factor in Greeley Colorado and picked up Unreal
Tournament for Dreamcast. All in all it was a good ole' Sega month for me.

I remember being in KMart (We only had them for a few years in Canada) and
the 32X was on super clearance and I could have got it and a bunch of other
accessories for the Genesis for real cheap and I didn't. Regretted that for
quite a while. But eBay and some online friends have blessed me with a
couple of 32X, Sega CD, CDX and a Nomad.

Now that I see DOOM is on XBOX Live Arcade, I'm seriously considering
plunking down the MS points to play it through. Some pals and I, when I left
my last job, had a DOOM night at the office. We ordered Pizza and drank some
beers and played 8 person DOOM using ZDaemon. It was a flipping blast. I
have always loved DOOM and DOOM II but it's one of the FPS that I like a KB
and Mouse for over the gamepad, but I think, with a little practice, I can
cure myself of that.
You guys have inspired me to get the DC back out and play a bunch of the
games with my 5yr old daughter (and wife, if she wants). I think she'd love
them. The last DC game we played was Spawn (was a lot of fun with her - she
was only 2.5 and was just mashing the buttons, but she thought she was
playing and was having a great time)
We've played through Golden Axe on XBL Arcade a few times and she asked to
do it again tonight. I think I can groom her yet. >> Stay informed about: Sega Holidays 2007 |

Not too shabby.

The dual analog sticks for Doom, at least, aren't too terrible just
because there's no looking up or down. With that said, I too prefer it
on the keyboard. I played through Ult. Doom, Doom II and Final Doom via
the Doomsday mod using the mouse/keyboard config. Was really great.
