Hey There

Well I'm back to D2/LoD again after a foray into, gasp, other games.

Played Travian for a while. A very fun game. But it's quite insidious. It
starts off as simple and quite slow, but it grows and takes up more and more
of your time. Till it pushes out all your other gaming time and starts
taking time away from real world activities. I was running an alliance with
almost 200 members. We were late starters to the world so we were far out
classed by the major powers of the world. But the world was so evenly
divided that we were in a power position. I ended up spending the vast
majority of my time running the alliance and playing world politics, and
didn't have time to actually play my cities and properly manage my armies.
And RL was being neglected. So I transferred my account to someone else in
the alliance and walked away clod turkey. Overall it was a VERY good time,
but just too much of a time commitment to continue.

I then moved to Civilization III. An old game, but I had never tried the Civ
series. It is another good game. A turn based simulation rather than a Real
Time Simulation like Starcraft/Warcraft. But it's more diplomacy and
culturally driven than a pure wargame, so it's not exactly my cup of tea. I
like a more hardcore wargame. But I still enjoy it. I just play a Communist
government and wage constant war.

So I came back to a comfortable old friend. And I was quite happily amazed
to see that I could recover all my expired characters. Something new? It's
wonderful because I had just re-established the basics in the new ladder
before I wandered off. I have a MF Sorc to run Hell Mephy for items, a
Trapper to run Keys, a Skellimancer to turn Keys into Organs, a Smiter to
hunt Clones and run UT, and the usual slaves; Chanter and BO Barb. So with
all the basics I get to come back and play fun toons. So I started a Bowler.
I played one with Spook and Cinna last ladder, and he was a blast, so I want
to try to Guardian one now. I blasted him through Normal and started to
actually play him in NM. A1 went well, no real problems. The little monsters
take multiple hits from my Boulders and generally die with 1 or 2. Bigger
monsters take more, but with a merc and Grizzly to keep them busy it's no
problem. I'm sure by late NM early Hell it's going to get tough, but that's
what I'm looking for.

So it's good to be back to D2/LoD, and it's good to see most of the usual
suspects still posting here. If anyone is playing EHCL, give me a yell and
I'll keep an eye out for you. I've run into Art a few times already.

Regards-
Mark

Hi Mark! Glad to hear from you again. There's still life here in the West
too!

Best,
Mark.

Mark, great to see you back. Smile

Yeah, the BCMs changed it so that expired characters are still accessable
unless someone else uses the name, in which case they're unrecoverable.
Being the BCMs I wouldn't want to rely on it too much though. You're one of
the lucky ones, more than one person has returned to the fold and deleted
their 'expired' chars, only to hear the news...

Welcome back.

Give it some time, I'm sure I'll piss someone off soon enough, and you'll
regret that this SoB came back.
LOL

Oh, I know the BCM's. I've been able to recover the occasional 'expired'
character in the past. So it's de rigueur to at least attempt to activate
them before deleting. So that's why I was so delighted to get all of my
toons back. Even the ones from last ladder on West (so if anyone wants
non-Ladder HC stuff, speak up. Bueller?).

At least at the beginning of this ladder season, East was much more
populated that what I saw on West in the previous ladder. And I have played
in the odd Basin game since coming back, there's still at least one HC game
going there every time I have looked.

Now if I hadn't been able to recover all my 'wealth' (LOL) from the early
part of the season I'd certainly have considered moving back West. But I
have just enough stuff on East that I can now play fun characters, instead
of just the cookie cutter power builds.

Speaking of other games, did anyone try Hellgate: London, by the ex-Blizzard
folks? Any reports on that game?

A lot of my GW and D2 mates tried it, reported it buggy as hell, and came
back to D2 and/or GW shortly thereafter. Never tried it myself, as my comp
can't handle it.

Much more interesting is perhaps Mythos, by the same guys:

www.mythos.com

They recently released Zone 3 (similar to an Act in Diablo II), with an
ice/snow theme. They also released the whole Crafting part of it, which is
_very_ complex, involving three trees of skills (separate from your main
skills), lots of ingredients, and the possibilities to make many many
things.

It's all still a bit buggy, but the biggest problems have been ironed out
with an even more recent patch.

It's currently in Closed Beta, with no more invites available, but it will
go to Open Beta soon. So they say.

Google this group on 'Mythos' to find some reports by myself, and others,
about this game, which will incidentally be free to play. See the forums
about Mythos for how they think to make money off it.

Regards,

Patrick.

It makes me want to be sure to pick odd enough names now when I make new
characters so that they aren't 'used' if I allow them to expire. I've
also enjoyed this new feature.

Glad you're back. Wherever we are.

Yeah, my computer is minimal for its requirements too. So I never even tried
the demo. But it certainly looked to have great potential. And the design
team had credibility. So I'm surprised to hear that it's a flop. That buggy,
eh? Not even something they patched up shortly after release to fix it up?
Just unplayable?

Not unplayable, just not FUN from what I've heard from most of my friends.

I didn't look around at that link too much. But what's the deal with the

Yeah, I was never very creative with my character names. So I'm surprised no
one took them. Even the AGDHC mules are still there; AGD-One, AGD-Two, ...

Same as it ever was. Sitting on the other side of my monitor.

It was pretty unknown to me too, until Shiflet told me about it, and got
me a Beta invite.

See their forums, specifically:

http://forums.mythos.com/showthread.php?t=15671>

(If the info is correct, the forums are readable for everyone since they
introduced Zone 3, although you need an account to post there..)
