Post subject: Hero 5th: Cost of Followers / Comps in a Base?
Archived from groups: rec>games>frp>super-heroes (more info?)

All,

I've been reading my 5th edition rulebook and I cant figure out the
cost of a follower or computer attached to a base. In both cases it
says divide by 5 and then add that to the cost of the base after you
calculate that. However, I dont know if the "calculation" is the sum of
the other base components, or if the calculation is the base/5 part. I
assume the worst, but I'm just not sure.

To me, a follower or a computer attached to a base, as opposed to one
that I take with me, would be cheaper. So would a vehicle limited to a
base (in case the base is huge and a vehicle, such as a fixed tram,
operates only inside the base).

Still, these things usually have the more expensive cost. I'm just
confused on the wording. Can anyone clarify? I have the Hero 5th
revised book, in case page references are in order.

Thanks,

Lewis

Sorry to bump my post but I really need to know the answer. Is the
final cost to a player for a 100 point follower, restricted to a base,
equal to 20 of the character's points (100/5) or is it equal to 4
character points ((100/5)/5)? Since the wording is "add the cost after
calculating the base cost" or whatever, I dont know if the
"calculation" of the base cost is the addition of its components, or
the division at the end.

Same goes for computers restricted to bases.

Thanks,

Lewis

You don't get to divide by 5 twice. Any followers/computers/vehicles/etc
attached to the base get calculated separately then added to the final cost of
the base; see page 5ER 467-8 (specifically the computer example notes that the
20 points for the computer are added to the base's *final* cost). Same goes for
personnel which is the very next section.

Now, one of the things that can be done with the computer (not so much for
personnel) is that it can be bought as a Focus. Most likely it would be
Obvious. If it's protected by the base's DEF, then it counts as Inaccessible;
otherwise it's Accessible. In addition, if it's confined to the base, it counts
as Immobile (built into a vehicle it would count as Bulky). So, for a base
computer that's built into the walls and thus get's the same DEF as the base,
you would have an Obvious Inaccessible Immobile Focus (-1.5) (see 5ER 293,
Mobility subsection).

BTW, a good place to go when you have rules questions is the official Hero Games
web boards (www.herogames.com/forums). For mechanics questions, you want the
"Hero System 5th Edition Rules Questions" forum where questions are answered by
Steve Long himself (usually within a couple hours). For "how to" or other
non-mechanic but still rules-related questions, there's the "Hero System
Discussion" forum where you'll get plenty of feedback from players. I go by
'Netzilla' on those boards but I rarely ever post.
