i was wondering if anyone would be able to give me a few pointers. I
bought quake years ago when i was at uni, and used to play with friends
over the uni's network. in those days the computers and modems were
too slow to have a decent game over the internet.

however i was sorting through some old computer stuff the other day and
found my old winquake disk. i installed it (i'm running win xp) and it
worked fine. i wanted to play over the internet with my brother, but i
have no idea how to do that. he has the same version installed. do i
need to run some sort of server, or can i just connect directly to him?
I'm not really interested in playing with other people on the
internet, but if anyone could give me a few pointers as to how I might
hook up a game with my brother, I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers elwood

i tried typing /connect "etc..." into the console, but it said no
servers detected. Is that where I am supposed to type it? Any other
ideas?

Cheers

if you are running windows firewall, you need to allow quake to access the
internet in the firewall settings

if you have a router (such as linksys) connected, you will need to forward
the ports used by quake to the machine running quake.

Yes, one of you (you or your brother) actually needs to 'host' a
multiplayer game of Quake for the other to actually connect to. Once
one of you has the game set up, you should be able to connect via the
console using the connect command and the IP address.

Hope that helps,

Myrmidon
