I hope I can get some help on this ng. I'm sure
these games are too old to be supported.
Incidentally, I'm using an eMachines T2200
running Windows XP which I just freshly
reinstalled.
1. Lost Treasures Of Infocom (1 and 2)
The status line doesn't appear at the top, but
instead at the end of each action, along with
some extraneous characters. This is merely
annoying for most games, but makes
Bureaucracy unplayable. Interestingly,
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy doesn't
suffer from this glitch.
2. Zork: Grand Inquisitor
Yes, I suppose a purist might not call it
interactive fiction, but I like it. At any rate,
whenever I try to run it, it keeps telling me to
insert disk 1, which is already in! This one is
particularly frustrating, as I know I used to be
able to play it on my machine. In fact, this
problem is a major reason I reinstalled
Windows, hoping that would solve it. Of course,
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game
countless times. Also, it seems to work just
fine on my brother-in-law's computer running
Windows XP.
TIA

Download a copy of WinFrotz. It plays these games much better on
modern Windows systems.

Here, I cannot help you.

You're thinking of the wrong game - Zork: GI was available on CD or
DVD. Copying to floppies would be practically impossible.

In DOS the ANSI.SYS driver had to be loaded to get rid of this.
Just use a recent interpreter like Windows Frotz.

Here's a question: Do you have two CD-ROM drives (Perhaps one CD-ROM
and one DVD-ROM drive)?
I had two CD-ROM drives once, and I used to always use the E: drive
because it was more reliable. But I found out that Return to Zork and
Zork Nemesis would not recognize the presence of the CD unless it was
in the D: drive. The same thing COULD be true of Zork: Grand
Inquisitor. The games would install from those drives, but when
PLAYING the games, it had to be in Drive D.
(I eventually re-wired my computer so that the more reliable drive was
Drive D: and the less reliable one--actually a DVD-ROM drive--was Drive
E . >> Stay informed about: Help with old games |

Zork Grand Inquisitor was created by Activision, long after Infocom
(the original company) had disintegrated. I don't even think it had
the Infocom name-brand on it.

I had this very same problem when trying to run GI on my laptop.
My laptop has a fixed CD plus one of those smart-bays which can hold a
floppy drive, zip drive, 2nd CD or extra battery. If I had anything
except a floppy in the smart bay, it would ask for CD 1, even though CD
1 was in the CD. I think that maybe since many modern computers don't
come with floppies, the problem is associated with that somehow.
Check out some of the tech help at TheZorkLibrary.com message board
because there has been some discussion about this problem. >> Stay informed about: Help with old games |

Thanks a lot! That was exactly the link I was looking for to make Zork
Nemesis run on my PC under Windows XP. It will be the first graphic
adventure for me to play in years and I'm really looking forward to it.
So I was very disappointed when I tried it to install it and it didn't
run from CD.
Thanks again
