Only 390Meg Smile Smile

By the time they get to patch #3 and they remove the subscription
nonsense, I might just buy the game....

It's a lot more than a patch. There are bug fixes, GUI tweaks and
gameplay balance adjustments included, but the core of the download is
the "Stonehenge Chronicle" expansion.

Stonehenge is even better than the original London setting in my
opinion. There are lots of new quests, new weapons and armours to find
and new demons and end level bosses to vanquish. There are also huge
"raid" areas and a new PvP arena for those that like that sort of
thing.

I'm tempted to resub, then - but I'm really held back by the lack of a
shared bank/mail system. I have all 6 character types on the go,
levelling them at the same pace, and my banks are full of nice loot
for the other classes that I have no way of transferring across...

I'm half tempted to pick this up next month but unsure about subs -
which I don't want to get involved with. What do I get for just buying
the game and not subscribing and what are the benefits of subscribing?

Without a subscription you get the full single player London game as
well as the multiplayer option which allows you play in instanced
co-op but only in non subscriber areas (most of the current game). The
single player game is one patch behind the multiplayer and some people
still have memory leak issues if they play for more than an hour or
so. Apart from that the single and multiplayer games are identical
(barring Stonehenge).

If you subscribe nothing changes in the single player game. A
subscription gets you the following in multiplayer only.

Larger stash (very useful)

Transmogrifying Cube. This doubles up as extra inventory space and a
mechanism for crafting certain items.

Guild creation tools

Unique items (armours and weapons)

Stonehenge

Access to subscriber only event content

Ability to play in Hardcore and Hardcore Elite modes

I pay the subscription and play solo in multiplayer (if that makes
sense). I get to use the bigger stash and all subscriber content that
way. There is no permanent difference in performance (lag wise)
between multiplayer and single player. I also like to see and chat
with other players in the underground stations. Sometimes I join a
party or create my own if the mood takes me.

I have a broadband connection so playing in multiplayer is no
different to playing the single player (except no disc is needed).

The sub fee is nominal, and in my opinion, worth it. I find the game
highly enjoyable and genuinely addictive. I am already engrossed in
Stonehenge and can't wait to see the new content that is already in
the works.

My advice to anyone buying the game would be to pay for a 3 month
subscription fee and see what they think of it.

There is still no mail system or shared stash. The former is coming
soon, the latter is still being discussed.

Most people resort to "muling" to get loot from one player to another.
I can't be arsed to do anything like that. I pay a sub and use the
increased stash space. You can only wear so much armour and equip 3
weapons. Loot drops are so frequent in this game that there seems so
little need to keep stuff for use later on. As it is now I stash stuff
and hardly ever get round to using it up. I end up vendoring it or
breaking it all down for crafting.

One great addition to the game is the respec token. I've revamped the
skill tree on 2 of my Marksman characters and it's made a huge
difference to their potency in Nightmare mode.

Before celebrating too much, take a look at this:-

http://news.filefront.com/hellgate-london-second-look-hellgate-chronic...-chroni

Still looks like a game rapidly destined for the bargain bin. How many
new or casual players spend any time looking for patches? Games with
single-player components have to work reasonably well straight out of
the box. Look at what happened to Gothic 3 and its price. Yes, the
patch efforts of the Gothic community and the prospective Gothic 4
developer MAY straighten out the most objectionable aspects of Gothic
3 ( memory leaks anybody?) but the opportunity to maintain pricing was
lost 2 months after Gothic 3 was shipped. -- because of the bugs and
performance issues.

The lethargic approach that Flagship Studios has taken to bug-fixing
on Hellgate has probablly poisoned most existing owners and
frigfhtened off prospective purchasers. And may well be remembered
very well when/if Flagship ever produce another game. And the $10
monthly fee for pathetic half-working addons is a joke. Give the
game's SDK to the mod-community which is likely to do a lot better
than Flagship and forget the fee... the original Counter-Strike model.

You get more items to find, and the new content.

Non-subs only get the original game, with patches. But not the new
content.

I'm pretty sure subs getmore bank space too - I no longer sub, but
still ahve the extra bank space, but that might be caused by the fact
that the extended space is full.

Yeah - my Evoker could do with a respec - she's 33, and has some skill
picks which aren't much use.

The lag bug was fixed within 24 hours.

Based on my experience, this is a decent game that should have had at
least another 3 months of beta testing before being released.

I can play the 1.0 version of the game for hours without encountering
a single bug. The game is now stable and I feel comfortable
recommending it to people.

Does the new patch remove the DVD check? I haven't seen a fixed exe
yet.. (and in case anyone jumps to any conclusions, yes I bought it.. I
use cracks for all my games simply for the convenience of not having to
go through the hassle of loading the discs, quick start-ups etc))

No, 1.0 does nothing for the single player game. You still need the
DVD to play it. MP however has no disc check.

Oh.. Thanks, I thought there were some SP aspects to it too (such as
"bug fixes" )

There are no plans to make subscriber content available in the SP
game. Can't wait until the mod community starts openning the hood on
this one.

SP fixes come out a few weeks after the MP patch comes out. THB, I
don't know if the a future SP patch wil have the Stonehenge content,
or if all new content is MP only.
