I am at the mines, looking for Graywolf and Emerson. My characters are
in desperate need of healing, a complete healing at that. I can't find
a place here to heal. What I'm trying to do (since there isn't an Inn)
is use my three healing spells, heal up, rest and renew the spells.
However, EVERYTIME I try to do this, I'm attacked at night. Hanging
around the guards doesn't help. I get these really powerful wolves
that cast strong spells that turn my characters into limp turnips, dead
ones at that.

There's gotta be some masterful technique for healing on the road and
not getting attacked in the process.

Thanks for all the help here.

Winter wolves, if you kill one you get a pelt that you can sell the
merchant in nashkill, for either 250 or 500.

Resting outdoors will have a certain chance you will be disturbed, it
varies, depending on where you are, safest thing is to go back to an
inn, but that means going back and forth a lot, Next best thing is quick
save before resting so if you get mugged and killed you can reload and
try again.

Imoen should have the ability to set a trap(5-10%), (unless BG1 don't do
that if not then never mind), hit the 4 point star on the far right then
try to set a trap where you are, or F12 - F1,
if you get disturbed it will trigger and hit the enemy, at 5-10% chance
to set, it may not get set very often but you never know.

Hmmm...first off, going back to Nashkel isn't a good choice. I have
characters that are complaining that I am not taking them where they
want to go, and I can expect at least a few fights crossing the field
to the carnival. I am not in the game right now but I think there is
an area between the mine and the carnival.

I was thinking this game has some sort of 'memory' and the harder I try
to heal, the more monsters it shoots my way. I tried that technique of
hugging the side and slipping out when the oil heated up too much, and
the game took me to some way layed area where I had to fight some
really nasty monsters.

Maybe this game has its own AI and can sense where my insecurities
about playing it really are. Surprised

This game is really messing with my mind, I tellya! Thanks for the
suggestion. I didn't do many side quests. I agreed to find a belt for
a guy in the Friendly Arms, picked up some old boots. I have six in my
party right now. I was down to five when a wolf killed Imoen, but I
didn't save that game and started over from the save before that. Smile

My party: Me (Fighter/Mage, half-elf, true neutral)
Imoen
Jaheira
Khalid
Kagain (fighter dwarf, lawful evil)
Branwen (Cleric.)

I'm now in the mines. I haven't talked to many people in towns yet and
only stayed at the carnival long enough to unstone Branwen (bought
spell in town for 200 deneros.) I didn't talk to Minsc because I
thought if I did and I didn't take him along right now, he'd end up
getting pissed and leave. The dwarf has some sort of mission up north,
I think. If he stays with me through the mines (he's already starting
to grumble a bit), I'll do that and then toss him to the dogs.

I went from Candlekeep to the Friendly Arms, down to Beregot (killed a
bounty hunter in one of the inns...went to all three inns, killed the
spiders, etc.), picked up the dwarf then headed to Nashkel and took out
the guy at the inn who wanted me toast. I was honest with the guy who
wanted to give me a few hundred pieces of gold if I was Graywolf.

And here I am.

Except for a few areas, there's always a chance that your sleep
will be interrupted.

If you don't mind doing this .. travel back to Nashkell Carnival
and rest in the south of that area (ar4900).

Another "questionable" method is to Q-save and then try resting.
Load Q-save if interrupted, try rest ... rinse, repeat until
rested.

There's always the cheating method of splitting up pairs
of NPCs. Ie, I tend to not like Khalid very much, but
at the same time I don't want to dump Jaheira. Similary,
Minsc is probably the best at being a front row tank, but
I sometimes don't want Dynaheir.

What you do is send one of the party into a building that
you'll never ever enter gain, then dismiss them from the
party. They're then unable to talk to you to say farewell,
which means that their partner is unable to leave with them.

Also watch out if you're taking Kagain. He's a pretty good
NPC, but being nominally evil aligned he's likely to leave
the party if your reputation gets too high. You can fix
this with some "friendly party" mods, or what I do is just
tweak the save game in ShadowKeeper to keep my reputation at
18 or lower. (I always think it absurd when an NPC leaves
in a pout just because I saved someone's life)

If your planning on picking up Minsc, you will need 2 slots, you have
about 10 days to pick up dynaheir or he will leave and or attack, and
you can't leave her behind and keep minsc either.

If you let Dynaheir die, Minsc should stay, but you do have to pick her
up first.
If you let Kahlid die Jaheria will stay but you can't kick him out,
thenyou could replace him with Minsc, although either seems a little
cold. Smile

To the "Nashkel Carnival" (area immediately east of Nashkel),
not to Nashkel. There is no area b/w the mine and the carnival.

No such memory. The game does not "take you" anywhere. It just
"serves" whatever is where "you" went.

It's the pseudo-random number generator, not the AI.

No, I enjoy conspiracy theories. I'll have to go with my first
impression on this.

Another point:

You don't have to walk off the "correct" edge of the map to get back
to an area you've already been to. You could walk off the left edge of
the map, but still select the area "above" in the world map. Or even
the area to the right...

Jonathan.

Thanks. I'll check that out when I get out of the mines.

Jaheira and Khalid (and Montaron and Xzar) stop complaining once you talk to
the guard captain in Nashkel (if I recall correctly). If you have Minsc, he
will get antsy if you take too long to rescue Dynaheir, his "witch". Those
four, along with Imoen (and yourself of course), are considered the default
group. It's a great group to have.
To turn Undead, just have Branwen get as close to some undead as possible,
click on the "turn undead" icon, and wait a few seconds for it to trigger.
Note at low levels, the best result will only be to make the undead run away
for a bit. Sometimes that's not very desirable. When you do that make sure
Branwen doesn't attack or do anything else or she will stop turning undead.

Most areas remain clear of monsters once you've killed whatever is there.
It's usually not a bad idea to go back to civilization and rest at an inn.
