Post subject: HERO: Character Design Question (TK/Gravity Based)
Archived from groups: rec>games>frp>super-heroes (more info?)

This is probably a really simple thing but I am
having a brain dead moment and could use
some insights/suggestions please.....

I'm toying with building a telekenetic who, as
part of her "flavor", draws a portion of her
TK strength from the "kenetic/potential energy"
within the object(s) she is manipulating. As an
example: Commander No Name tosses a
battleship at the hero group. The TK-er in
question grabs it in the air. Her TK strength
would be greater (or her END cost lower..not
certain yet which) when the battleship in question
is at it's greatest altitude/highest speed, since
her TK could be described as "feeding" from the
inherant energy in the object. As she slows it down
and/or lowers it to ground level, her TK weakens (or,
as posited previousely, her END cost increases).

Any thoughts on a generally acceptable method
to accomplish this sort of effect ?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah. Don't. You are talking about inflicting a
mathematical nightmare on yourself and possibly
your GM. That sort of thing is just a special effect.
Besides, it's not physically valid. The potential energy
inside an object that is on the ground versus one that
is a thousand feet in the air is virtually the same. The
difference in distance between it and the Earth's
center of gravity is in the two cases is negligible and
incalculable.

True enough.....Hmmm. I suppose that
a staggered level of END cost based
on "range to target" might accomplish
waht I am looking for and do so in a
slightly neater package....Or not. =]

I *know* that the "potential energy" thing has been done before (Remy
says "hello"), but as in flavor as it may be, it's a
real-world-physics and game-mechanics nightmare. I would strongly
suggest just saying that it works that way as a special effect, and
leave it at its base value (0 Limitation).

Create a new disadvantage, called Increased by range.
Similar to the decreased by range, but in reverse, where you have almost
no power in close to the Earths surface, but greater further away from
it. The max effect would be the powers max range.

As to potential energy..
Potential energy = mass * gravitational acceleration * height
Therefore the further an object gets from your reference point (Earth's
surface) the greater it's potential energy.

That's the wrong reference point. The right reference point would be
the Earths's center of gavity.

The thrown battleship is an RKA. Would not an appropriate absorpotion usable
at range linked to TK be it?

No it isn't. And no it wouldn't be.
