Haven't a clue how to get your key out of it. However reinstalling without
the CD's is simple. You can download the whole game from Bliz.

You could contact Bliz, perhaps there is a way to repair the installation.
They're probably want to know what happened to your original CD's though.

I never had any original cd's ... I downloaded a trial version and then
opened an account after the 10 day trial.

Only copy I have is on a hard drive...hmmm guess maybe I should burn a
copy .... doh!

For starters, try describing the way that it won't start. Do you get
error messages, does the screen go black like it's going to load, but
then just drops back to the desktop and say nothing. Does the
launcher program work okay?

error messages etc but I found the support number and am downloading the

I dont think you need the CDs at all do you?? I copied my Warcraft
folder over to my laptop and just ran it no problem.

I did too. Just have to copy the Interface and WTF folders from one to
the other to keep them synchronized.

This is true.
I just built a new machine (still WinXP) and my old harddrive is now
my backup/supplemental drive. All I did was drag the entire WoW
folder off of E:\ and onto C:\ (the new drive, faster drive). No
installing, no downloading, no patching. Everything worked perfectly,
keybindings, add-ons, everything.
Of course, this process will not work for most programs because most
rely on writing info to the Windows Registry.

I can just copy my folder from one machine to another, but Macs are
special that way. I'm glad to hear that Blizzard is among the smarter
Windows programmers, given that you can do that on Windows as well.

As for installing the whole thing, I see that you said you downloaded
the app, but If you'd rather have something on disc, I saw a trial DVD
at Gamestop the other day for $1.99. It didn't have Burning Crusade,
but I picked it on the off chance I'd have to someday install from
disc again, it would at least save me the trouble of having to shuffle
CDs.

I don't understand why it doesn't work for you. Normally all one has to
do is copy the folder. Wow is portale (even though its fairly big)

You only need the key to chreate the account, there isn't really a copy
protection since you can't use it unless you have an account.

Indeed. Of course they don't need to do this, its nice Blizzard has
programmed wow not to require this.
