He might possibly see some difference between 720p and 1080p given the size
of the screen on a set that supported that resolution, assuming he was close
enough to the display as most of the difference would be in the background.
But I doubt seriously that he'd be able to see much difference between 720p
and 1080i on his set.

Also, I found this bit of interesting tweaking to get TVs like mine to
do 1080p via VGA with no overscanning. But since I gave up on playing
games on my PC long ago, I only have an onboard graphics controller on
my system. Arrrrrgh. >> Stay informed about: HDMI cable for XBOX 360??? |

A fixed pixel display (Plasma, LCD, etc.) is incapable of showing anything
other than the progressive native resolution it is designed to show.

That makes perfect sense, I guess I always thought the upconversion
that is done at the source (upconverting DVD player, etc) is different
than what the TV does with an incoming 480i signal in order to display
it on its fixed native resolution. After all, why is there such a big
deal made about upconverting DVD players? Do most modern HDTV's not do
the upconversion as well as an upconverting DVD player or 360? >> Stay informed about: HDMI cable for XBOX 360??? |

Actually it can look worse if the upconverter (360 or DVD player) does
a worse job of scaling the original image than your TV. Seems like
that's not usually the case though, because why would there be some
many HD upconversion DVD players out there? I've also heard people say
in various forums that the 360 via VGA does a good job of upconverting
DVD movies. I have a 360 and a regular progressive scan DVD player,
but no 360 VGA cable, so I can't test whether this is the case on my TV
but am curious if the 360 really would upconvert DVD's better than my
TV. >> Stay informed about: HDMI cable for XBOX 360??? |

I wouldn't know the answer to that I guess it would depend on the quality of
the scaler.

I think it can be done but it would be incredibly complicated.
Here's a converter box that takes a VGA signal and outputs it to DVI:
http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1310
(Option 3 on this box would equal 1080p)
Then you convert the DVI to HDMI:
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI_monitor_cables.html
The problem is that initial jump from VGA to DVI. The cheapest
conversion box I could find was $250 and prices went up to $800. Going
from analog to digital is way, way more expensive than downconverting
digital to analog (DVI to VGA plugs are cheap and plentiful.)

That's a pretty cool device. I was reading the specs and you dont even need
a 360 VGA cable to work this bad boy just plug your component (comes with
the 360) into the supplied VGA to Component cable and BANG you're done! I
wonder if it would really work though. $179.00 + shipping is a bit much just
to find out though, also you would probobly need these
http://tinyurl.com/y5wf69 to get (presumably) the male ends of your 360
component and the supplied VGA to Component cable to connect. If anyone does
it post back and do tell. >> Stay informed about: HDMI cable for XBOX 360??? |

It is a pretty cool device for what it does, but is of limited use for
most people since the main reason you would need this device would be
if you needed HDMI or VGA input to display full 1080p resolution but
your TV was lacking a VGA port. From what I've seen almost all 1080p
TV's have a VGA input. >> Stay informed about: HDMI cable for XBOX 360??? |

It appears the converter is for DVI-I. Most sets have DVI-D. Even if there
is some converter from VGA to DVI-D, I have a feeling this would really look
awful.

It is an interesting accessory but I'm curious as to the quality of output
users are reporting and I'd certainly want to know that before purchasing.
