Is there an HDMI cable for the XBOX 360? Any on the horizon? It would
makes sense for an HDMI cable but would it even be possible?
My regular DVD's are not upcoverted to 720p or 1080i which I thought it
was supposed to do. I've read that the 360 does upconvert but only
using the VGA cable which does me no good, my Hi-Def TV does not have
VGA inputs.
I'm also curious as to whether the 360 HD-DVD player can play movies in
1080p, I thought 1080p was only possible through DVI/HDMI?

I just find it a bit confusing that the 360 claims to be a
Hi-definition media center yet it doesn't contain any DVI or HDMI
capability.

Thanks in advance.

My tv is actually a 55 inch Sony LCD projection ( KDF-55E2000 ), it's a
damn sweet t.v but no vga connections.

My tv is actually a 55 inch Sony LCD projection ( KDF-55E2000 ), it's a
damn sweet t.v but no vga connections. My TV only supports up to 1080i
but I was really hoping to get my 360 to upconvert my DVD's. I guess
I'm screwed until MS comes out with an HDMI cable.

I actually have it set to 1080i

I was hoping the 360 would upconvert my regular DVD's to 720p or 1080i
but it looks like
only through VGA. That was my main concern.

Not that strange. My set is a couple years old and supports 720p and
1080i over DVI and component. It also has no VGA port.

The problem is, he wants 480p DVD's to be upconverted to 720p which he
can't do because he doesn't have a VGA input on his TV. If there was a
360 HDMI cable then this would solve the problem. I don't think MS
will make one though, since the cable would have to perform quite a bit
of magic to convert analog signals into digital HDMI, and do it at an
affordable price. There are a few converter boxes on the market that
can do this but they are kinda expensive and not sure how well they
actually work. Below is one of them:

http://www.lenexpo-electronics.com/product.php?productid=16544

In theory, I suppose you could buy a VGA 360 cable for your 360, plug
it into this, and have it come out HDMI. Anybody have any experience
with these things?

No there is no HDMI cable, the 360 lacks the proper scaler for HDMI. But
maybe once they decide on an HDMI format and stick with it, the 360 will be
able to do it. Right now there is just too much uncertainty with HDMI.

The 360's HD-DVD drive can do 1080i through component but you'll need the
VGA to do 1080p and to upconvert.

Your TV claims to be HD, yet it has no VGA inputs? That's very odd.

If you have a TV capable of 1080p (I do) then you are seeing 1080p anyway.
It's a fixed pixel diplsay (Plasma or LCD) and that's what it will out-put.
I have watched HD-DVD @ 1080i and BD @ 1080p on my 46" Bravia and can't tell
the difference. The only obvious differences are quality levels of
individual movies.

No...Probably not, though they claim when there is more demand they might do
so but the current 360 is only delivering an analogue signal. Hence, it
would require an upgrade to the system. I think, if they could have such a
connection, they would have brought it out this holiday season. The fact
they didn't, given the release of the PS3 and their 360 software dashboard
update to allow for 1080p I think speaks volumes for the ability of the
current 360 to accomodate such a connection.

Upconverting to 720p, 1080i or 1080p is currently only possible over VGA.
Are you sure your TV has no such input. Does it have an input labeled PC
input or RGB as either of these might be the VGA input on your set?

> I'm also curious as to whether the 360 HD-DVD player can play movies in

Yes it can, assuming your set is 1080p compatible and you have the dashboard
update mentioned above, it's downloaded automatically to your system if you
are connected to Xbox Live but it does requre a VGA. VGA, for some reason,
is not covered by the spec covering 1080p, no HDCP requirement currently for
VGA, hence, because VGA can produce the necessary resolutions, assuming
compatibility with the connected set or monitor, you can achieve 1080p
through VGA.

> I just find it a bit confusing that the 360 claims to be a

This is an incorrect assumption. If it were true, since most HDTVs in homes
today don't even have an HDMI connection, none of them would be able to show
television in HiDef resolutions of 720p or 1080i and that is clearly not the
case. DVI/HDMI is the agreed upon digital standard which incorporates HDCP,
thus providing copy protection for digital high definition. Nonetheless, it
is prossible for all current high definition to be acquired over current
analogue connections. Both VGA and component connections are capable of
transmitting that signal assuming a compatible TV is capable of receving
such signals over those connections. Most current TVs can receive 720p and
1080i over component, some current sets, though not many, can also receive
1080p over component and as I mentioned, some sets can do so over VGA
connection.

Are you sure about this? I always thought you couldn't upconvert DVD
component input past 480p. Most HDTV's will automatically make any
signal progressive but not sure about upcoverting everything. I know
Sony has Digital Reality Creation but I thought this was only for 480i
tv broadcast sources that it upconverted.

My TV, similar to the original poster's TV from Sony doesn't have any
VGA inputs, but it does have an "PC" input. But, this isn't the same
as the VGA input is it? Any idea as to what I can with this "PC"
input in terms of being able to get my TV to do 1080p with my 360?
TIA.

Yes, the PC input on your TV is VGA. However, due to the Synch on Green
issue I mentioned above, your set may not be compatible with the 360's VGA
connection. It may make mention in your set's owner's manual if your set
can't handle this type of VGA connection. I've seen such mention in some of
the Sony Bravia owner's manuals.

If you have a plasma tele it already upconverts. Upconverting is vastly
overrated. Your TV will automatically convert every input to it's native
signal. I own the a standalone HD-A1 player and my tele does as good a
job at upconverting standard DVD's as my HD-DVD player does.

First, the native resolution on your specific model is 1280x720 and that is
720p. There is a difference between a set that can accept 1080i as is the
case for your set and a set that actually has a native resolution of 1080i.
Your set can accept 1080i but it will be downscaled to 720p.

Second, as RKRM pointed out in this thread, your set, as any fixed pixel
display will automatically upconvert to its native resolution. Hence, even
though the 360 cannot upconvert a standard definition DVD to 720p through
component inputs, your set should upconvert it to its native resolution
anyway.

Be aware, many Sony sets that have VGA input are not currently compatible
with the 360 VGA input anyway because of Synch on Green which the 360 uses
and is currently not compatible with the VGA input on many of Sony's current
sets. Hence, even if you had a Sony with that input, for the moment, it
might not make a difference.

For more information and feedback as well as a look at a huge thread on
HDMI, go to www.xbox.com, mouse over "Community," then click "Forums," click
"All Forums" in the right hand column, scroll to General Discussion and
click the Audio Visual forum, scroll down to "Official Xbox360 HDMI/DVI
Adapter" thread. Note: while there's a lot of information there, I wouldn't
get my hopes up too much about such an add-on with the current configuration
and, frankly, for 720p sets, I don't think such an add-on will make much
difference.

Your TV can only handle 720, so why are you even concerned about 1080? Hook
up the component cables, set it to 720p, and you're set. Even if you could
do 1080 I'll put money down that says you wouldn't be able to see the
difference in 720p and 1080p.
