I've been toying with the idea of starting a guild and one of the questions
I have concerns setting up a guild bank. How does this work, exactly? Does
one establish a guild bank under a separate WOW account and then have a
bunch of bank toons?

I know this is a naive question, but I would like to understand the
advantages and disadvantages. I know that my current guild lost quite a few
members when the officers setup the bank without thinking thru everything.

Cheers,

In most of the cases that I know of one of the officers (usually the
GL) simply creates toons on their own account and uses them for banks.
This was how it worked when I was a guild leader and we never had any
real problems with it.

Purchasing a separate account for banks only would seem to me to
introduce more headaches than it would solve. The account would still
have to be owned by an individual and would be subject to their whims.
Also, you would have to decide how you would collect the monthly fee
from members if one person doesn't want to pay for the account.

Couple of pointers:

- Always make the banker an alt of the Guild Leader.
- The bank alt should be able to disenchat unwanted stuff that is not
sellable (odd stats).
- The banker should keep a mail log. Nothing fancy - just an exercise book
with names, dates and items incoming/outgoing will do.
- The Guild Leader should never share his or her account. Obvious - but
often overlooked.
- The banker should be checked often, preferably daily.
- Include the details of the banking arrangements in the guild info page so
anyone can look it up at any time.
- Officer notes on guild members should include tradeskills to help with
distributing.

I solo often when not PvPing with my guild, so used to send all the greens I
can't use to the guild bank. I then found out he can't disenchant so now
have to be careful only to send items through which are usable/sellable. The
disenchat trash I now send directly through to our budding enchanter.

This is how my guild does it. He then uses some addon or other to dump
the contents of the bank characters to an HTML file which is linked from
our guild website, so people can see what's in the bank.

To contribute to the bank, people just mail items to the bank character.
To request stuff out of the bank, we have a thread on our guild forums.

Cheers!

I hold our Guild Bank character (Baglady) as a level 5 dwarf who inhabits
the IF bank. Anyone who gets spare stuff mails it to her and she uses a
hacked together addon which allows all Guildies with the addon to view the
contents of the guild bank as if it was another bag (just a very big bag).
They can send requests to Baglady by mail and I mentally keep track of
wheter people are "generous" or "scroungers" and distribute loot accordingly
(If we were a serious raiding guild we would probably have an official
record of donations each way)

It would need a bit of cleaning up as it has stuff hard coded which would
need changing for another guild ( channel name and name of bank character) -
I also used a comms addon called Globalcomm to do the transfer of info. But
if you really want to see it feel free to grab it from:

www.tickecnote.net/baglady.zip

I think that has both the baglady addon and the globalcomm one too. It does
some wierd stuff because I haven't got really heavily into LUA etc so if
anything looks particularly odd you can ask me via mail at
info.TakeThisOut@xxxxxxxxxx.net where the "xxxxxxxxxx" is in fact "tickencote".

once I understand the WoW ui a bit better I hope to allow the baglady to
offer items and online guildies flag their interest - but that my never
happen because it would reduce my play time!

Nah we like to think of ourselves as a serious raiding guild but our
system is just that the GM mentally keeps track of whether people are
"generous" or "scroungers". Smile

(distribution of cores, core leather, Onyxia cloaks, elementium ore,
etc. is handled a bit more formally though)

Cheers!

If you want a guild bank just make a seperate character on your account named
something like xxxbankone or bankxxxtwo where xxx is a shortened version of your
guild name. Numbering them can be a good idea for the future - our guild now
has 6 banks all named something weird.

As long as everyone understands that the bank is for all to use you should be
fine. If a new member comes along and wants 10 mooncloth and 10 cores for some
flarecore peice then don't give it to them. Spread the love out over everyone.
