I still have my laptop, because it was with me,
but while I was in Georgia to greet my newly-returned-
from Iraq soldier son, someone broke into our house
while my husband was at work. Among other things,
they took my desktop computer, which had the disk
you need in the drive to play Pets. I still have
the other disk and the box, and I'm pretty sure
I registered it at the Maxis site, since I always
do that first thing. I'm wondering if I can get
a replacement disk from Maxis or if I'll need
to buy Pets again. But my laptop isn't powerful
enough to run Sims 2, really. I mean, it runs,
but it's really slow. So oddly enough, I'm actually
looking forward to Life Stories coming out. I told
my hubby it can be a late Christmas present for me.
It will probably be a while before we can replace
our desktop units.
I kind of just wanted to vent. It could be a lot
worse. Everyone is safe, and nothing was taken
that really, truly can't be replaced. Just...
GRRRR!

I'm pretty sure they'd replace it for you - probably for a small fee. What
a bummer. It's such an upsetting experience. Still, at least your son is
home.
Best wishes

There are some real bastards in this world. To keep playing for the moment
you can use a no cd crack, but that won't help you if you need to reinstall
for any reason. I'd check out the EA option (I just don't know, but if they
replace for broken disks I think that they would also for a stolen disk when
you have all that corroborating evidence).

Be hard to play when the computer it was installed on was stolen, though.

Do you have homeowner's or renter's insurance? If you do, it sounds like a
claim might be in order. You will likely have a $500 deductible, but
depending on what else was stolen, it would be a far cheaper way to replace
everything. I'm sorry to hear about the theft, it must be infuriating to
lose stuff that way, plus being left feeling so vulnerable. Contacting
Maxis is the only way to find out if they will replace that disk. Good luck
on it.

Yes, luckily we do have homeowner's insurance, and
yeah, the deductible is $500. I'll add Pets to the
list of stuff stolen. I don't know what kind of
reimbursement we'll get, since they depreciate
everything, but anything is better than nothing.
We have to replace the front door frame, since
they broke it all to pieces. No idea how much
that kind of thing costs. I'll contact Maxis
about the disk and maybe I can get it replaced.
Thanks for letting me vent, guys!

You'll have to forgive me because I am in the UK, but insurance was my job
for many years. I am fascinated by a company suggesting you are
over-insured, as I can't see what good it would do you, as opposed to them -
unless they mean item by item, which isn't how we do it here unless the item
is an exceptionally large proportion of the total. Under insurance was
always the problem, and people thinking they could insure their contents
for enough to get started again, as opposed to the full value. Fine in the
event of a total claim, but somehow they expected the full value to be paid
out on the smaller ones too - a total claim for one room just isn't on.
Mold damage wasn't something I ever saw covered - but then it isn't much of
a problem. Flood has always been one of the basics that you can't
cherrypick out of, but then mostly it's more likely to be a problem.

In my day it was paperback books, deemed throwaway after you'd read them,
and worthless.

Higher fire risk. Be thankful you don't have a thatched roof.

It is, but they are commercial organisations who need to make a profit like
any other. They aren't going to jump over themselves to take on bad risks.
Not at a price the bad risks are willing to pay, anyway. What those people
need is a good broker ( or whatever they are called over there ), a good
explanation, and if necessary and possible, evidence of what has been done
to reduce the risk... Anything dodgy about the claim and would you take
them on?

There is more than one way to "flood," though. You get a busted water pipe
on a second floor bathroom and ruin a couple of rooms below and they don't
have to cover it if you don't have flood insurance. I know. Been there!

I was watching CNN the other night. Florida is working to pass legislation
that will force companies to either insure everybody in Florida or they
can't do business within that state, period. I think that's a good thing.
Even with the hurricanes last year, insurance companies posted record
profits. That's just not right. So many people didn't get a settlement at
ALL, or they only paid for a damaged roof when the whole house was blown
away.
I detest insurance people. And my step-daughter is office manager for one!
Yikes! My husband suggested one day that our son might think about going
into insurance sales and I nearly slapped him. I'd rather see my boy become
a car theif or bank robber or a preacher or some other kind of crook.

I think there should be some kund of caveat where insurance companies,
like mortgage brokers, should have home inspections. They do that
commercially. THat way, when there is substandard building or something
is not up to snuff, a person would be aware of it and not surprised when
it's not covered. Would also take care of mobile homes that are
substanddard and not tied down correctly. When out boat is out of the
water duting hurricane season, the insurance company requires us to have
it tied down..to cement...of it's not and falls off it's stands then
it's not covered. Many people just insure stuff that's in bad condition
and then make a claim when it's destroyed. Have seen it happen many
times. If so many people didn't cheat, then the price would come down.
ANother pet peeve of mine is when people intentionally build in a
dangerous area (flood plain, shifting sand dunes, on the slp[es of an
active volvano) and then get reimburswed when the natural thing happens.
Duh...do they actually think that volcano is going to hold off spewing
because they built a house there? Just dumb. And they shouldn't be insured. >> Stay informed about: Grrr! My computer was stolen! |
