Post subject: Great PS2 games...
Archived from groups: uk>games>video>playstation (more info?)

I have this huge gap of about the last 3 years, say from about a month ago
or so, where I had no PS2 at all, and rarely even bothered to notice what
was out for it. After my first PS2 died....I got pissed off and decided not
to buy another. Now I have one again and am planning on catching up on all
the good games I've missed during that time. I like action/adventure, some
RPG's and decent racing games. I wouldn't mind a few top 10/20 lists....so
if anyone knows any good sites or forums with people's top 10 PS2 games, or
even if anyone can be arsed to compile one for me here, based on the genres
I like, that'd be great.

I have Pro Evo 5, GT4, MGS2, MGS3, GOW (on the way), Ico, SOTC, Splashdown
2, GTAIII, Klonoa... and plan on getting the DMC games, Onimusha games,
Tenchu, Rygar, Final Fantasy X. So, I either own now or have
ordered/bookmarked/earmarked all those games, so it's other *good* games of
a similar ilk I'm looking for.

[I have all the POP games on my PC by the way, and Resident Evil 4 on my
Gamecube....so basically looking for recommendations other than all the
above. Really appreciate any input from the folks here, as I trust the
opinions more than joe public/casual gamers on amazon/listmania etc.] Smile

Cheers.

Why not try some less well-known games like Haunting Ground or the
Megaten games (Shin Megami: Nocturn). On the SRPG front Disgaea and as
was mentioned Makai Kingdom which has a lot of favour with fans at the
moment (Keep an eye out for the new one from Nippon Ichi - sorry - keep
forgeting the name... If you are looking for more traditional console
RPGs then there's the popular (non-FF's) Dark Cloud2, Star Ocean and
Shadow hearts.
Good luck games hunting.

I can't even remotely recommend playing Xenosaga Episode II without
playing the original. It simply doesn't work, even if you do manage to
sit yourself through the four+ hour long recap DVD, there is so much of
importantance cut out it only really works as a recap for those who have
played it. Best off waiting for XS I&II for the DS and hoping XSIII gets
a European release.

Star Ocean 3 is excellent, though, as is Disgaea. Makai Kingdom is less
so - the gameplay felt like a backwards step from N1s previous game,
Phantom Brave, whilst the writing was a waste of the brilliant
characters they had come up with for it. The highlight in the writing
was the obligatory cameos of previous N1 characters in the bonus maps
you unlock later on.

The Shadow Hearts games might be worth a look. The first is, admittedly,
a PSOne bound title quickly recoded for an early PS2 release, but its a
decent enough game and the setting is different enough from the norm to
make it interesting. The sequel is supposed to be far better, but I've
not got around to playing it yet. The third, just about to be released
in the US, is looking rather lovely as well.

Disgaea 2 Razz

Well, OK, I presume you mean Atelier Iris, which is actually a 3rd party
title N1 decided to publish in the US. Don't let that put you off,
though - its a fantastic game.

Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Rez, We Love Katamari, SSX Tricky and
Fantavision (if you have a friend to play it with).

If you don't have an Xbox add Burnout 3: Takedown to that list.

Thanks for them...and for all recommendations from everyone else, I
appreciate them. Yes, I was eying up Burnout 3 - but I love to play B2 a lot
(Gamecube), and have been told it's not quite as good as that game (4 even
worse, or so I'm told). So I was waiting to see what the upcoming Outrun
2006 was like before deciding one way or the other. I love arcade racers,
but never liked NFSU...which I bought for my Cube, and so I wish to get a
decent one to play when I [finally] tire of Burnout 2. Smile

Like me, you seem to like action adventure games. I highly recommend Beyond
Good and Evil. You may have already played it though as it was also on
gamecube and xbox.

I also recommend the Sly Raccoon games 1-3 - cel shaded thieving goodness.
Episode 3 I reckon was the best, but all games were good.

Played BG&E when I had an Xbox - one of my favourite games in fact. I might
re-purchase it for Gamecube or PS2 at some point though, it deserves another
spin. Fantastic game.

I'll check out some reviews, cheers. Also, do you like Ratchet & Clank? That
seems to get recommended to me fair bit.

Shop around in the used GS section and on eBay, you should be able to
pick up B3 for a tenner. If you don't like it you'll make most of your
money back. IMO the quality order is 3, 2, 1, 4. The interface on 3 is
utter wank (EA's influence), but once you're actually on the track it's
spectacular, way better than 2 IMO.

Yep Ratchet and Clank 1,2 and 3 are all good. Although 3 was a bit of a
deviation from the previous games. Same goes for Jak and Daxter 1,2,3.
Just remembered a few more... Ghosthunter, Project Zero 1 2 and 3 (3 is new
out last week). Project Zero games are pretty scary. You have no weapons
but are armed with only a camera to kill ghosts, original in that aspect but
has a feel of Resident Evil games, even down to the interface. maybe made
by same people.
Oh there are so many great games on ps2, it would take me ages to look
through the list and type out a top 100 Smile

I got on with it pretty well, but then I had cut my teeth on the 2
G-Police games. Only problems I have with Dropship, it's too short, and
no there hasn't been a sequel.

Just about the first thing I did (when it finally let do some config
stuff) was switch to wait mode. Ultra confusing combat at first.
