I can't get the grapple to "stick" on the ledge above the double doors on
the first level. It seems I am hitting the ring, but the grapple won't stay
put.
I have a PS2 machine (I bought it used as I had a lot of trouble on my PC
with Legends and AOD, and wanted a better experience with TRA). I push jump
then grapple quickly, or jump and grapple together, or jump then grapple.
Sometimes I will jump a couple dozen times before the grapple even fires. I
line up on the ledge until the ring is highlighted. Problem (as usual) is I
can't get Lara to walk so I can get her straight on with the ring. And when
I fumble around and get her straight, everytime she jumps she moves away
from the ring.
What in the frickin' heck am I doing wrong?? I'm ready to chuck the whole
thing and just put Tomb Raider I in the PS2 and say forget it.

Problems using the grapple to jump/swing across an open space had been
annoying me also. Seemed so much easier in TRL.

I believe the method that works is to already be moving forward before
pressing jump. You can't be standing still when you press 'jump'.

I've only been playing using the demo, and I'm not certain I recognize your
description of double doors, but the 1st grapple point seems overly
difficult to me. On the PC, I have had to use the camera angle to get Lara
to walk up to the very edge of the ledge (no pun there), then basically
facing in the correct direction, you jump then grapple. Once that works, be
careful to not swing backward, as in my case if you do, Lara automatically
releases grapple and drops back on your starting ledge. I'm not certain
about the PS2, but with my PC gamepad, you creep/walk/run with the left
joystick, controlled by how much forward you push on the joystick (ie: a
little is creep, slightly more is walk, and all the way forward is run).
Hope this helps.

at least on pc i notice that you can be above OR below the hook you're
going to grapple. if you notice when you jump that the beacon blinks
for a second it's because you were essentially out of range while you
were 'even' with it. if you strike when above and it seems to connect,
then the beacon will disappear, making the loop or hook basically stop
working for a moment until you are 'below' it, when your grapple
disconnects. obviously, below is where you should be striking.

other than that it could just be a worn out controller or user error. Wink

on pc lots of people have complained, but i have only had maybe 3 screw
ups using the grapple. i got lara swingin' around like spider man, i
do! i rather like the grapple in this game. MUCH better and not so
overused on stupid things that can be easily climbed or jumped to, like
Legend was. still WAY to conevenient for my taste, though, but fun when
you get the hang of it.

As said by Andy, if you know that a ring is available to grapple, then you
do need to jump out, and effectively be mid air, before the grapple will
work. I find jumping in a particular direction and then hitting grapple a
split second later usually does the trick. Sometimes it fails, and can be a
pain - a bit later in the first level, at the big drop was a problem.

I only just discovered that you can make Lara walk by pressing R2. You have
to press R2 again to get her to run.

I think you should play something more than the demo Inu-Yasha. The game
gets better and better as it goes along and the Egypt levels are wonderful.

That's your opinion, and you seem to love consoles and what they have done
to TR, while I don't. I will not buy TRA until it is down to $5, and I
won't entertain thots of even looking at anything else EIDOS offers, TR or
otherwise.

Yes that is my opinion. It's an opinion based on playing the whole game and
not just part of the demo.

You cannot possibly have formed a proper opinion of the whole game if you
haven't played beyond the demo and from what I read have only completed
about a half of it anyway. My enjoyment of the game has nothing to do with
playing on a console. It's a good game. I have played some of the demo on
my laptop and I would have played the game on that if it were capable but it
runs too slow.

I have played all TR Games except Legend and TRA on PC and I have played
some of TR1 and 2 on PS although I haven't had time to play very much of
them.

I understand why you would want to pay bargain prices for a game if you're
not sure about it, but I think you should reserve your opinion of the whole
game until you've played it properly.

Gee, give it a rest already. If you like the game, fine. If I don't like
the game fine. it is silly of you to try to tell me how I should form my
opinion of the game. As of now, I am not going to spend any money buying
TRA and attempting to play it just to form a more in depth opinion. Maybe
they should have included the mansion in the demo, or maybe they should have
been more true to the original TR1, and not jump you with wolves, and try
your patience with the new version of the cog wheel puzzle, or introduced
the infamous grapple so early in the first level. I played a lot further
and with less difficulty in TR1, before I had problems, and then I was able
to reload, even if it was on the following day, rather than attempting a
marathon TRA 'Try to finish Level 1'. My opinion stands, as I am certain
does yours. Enjoy.

I'm sorry you take that attitude. I don't think it's silly. I thought I
was trying to say that you might want to give the game more of a chance.
You were posting as if you'd played a great deal more of the game than part
of a level. You cannot possibly judge a whole game by a demo. I have
played many demos which have put me off games I have later enjoyed, and
conversley I have been disappointed with games where I really enjoyed the
demo.

I was just having a discussion. No need to get touchy with me.
