Got C&C Gold to work with W2K finally...

....but it wasn't that easy in the first run.

The installer (setup) won't run under W2K,
regardless if you activate W95 compatibility mode or not,
as suggested in
http://www.planetcnc.com/features/techtroopers/classicsInXP/

Maybe the US versions of CCGold have a different installer,
but my German installer version definitely won't work under W2K.

So I made a clean install under W98SE,
copied the whole C&C95 directory structure to my W2K machine,
and applied the Westwood 'CCGold XP patch',
which only replaces a local C&C network play dll.
Then, and only then, it works under W2K.

Hope this helps somebody who had similar problems.
