I'm looking at buying a house and have found one with a basement. Is
100sqft considered goood for building a game room? I haven't seen the
house in person yet..but I will be soon. Just wanted to get some
opinions.

Thanks!

depends, is that an empty room or a 100 sq foot basement? How many
games? If the basement is 100 sq ft probably not so much when you
factor in things like plumbing, furnace, water heater, etc, unless it's
100 sq ft of finished space. I'm figuring a 10X10 room, so that's
enough sq footage for about 10-12 games depending on size, type etc.
You could obviously squeeze in more, depending on your comfort level,
if you want anything but games in the room, have mini's or cabarets vs
full size uprights and cockpits, etc.
Just my 2 cents worth...

Are you sure you have the right measurement? a 10 x 10 basement just
doesn't sound right.

100 sq ft is TINY. You can fit some machines in there but it will be
very cramped and very hot. 100 sq ft doesn't sound right either - sure
it's not like 20x20? If so that would be good space.

Don't forget a basement needs a walkout or you will kick yourself later
if you do plan on putting a lot of games down there.

You can never have enough room. Assuming the room is 10x10, you could
probably fit around 8 uprights in there. It will be kinda cramped.

You couldn't be more wrong. If a gameroom is a feature that makes you
HAPPY and enjoy your house then that's what you look for. If you can't
be happy and satisfied with what you bought then you will be miserable
in that house for as long as you own it. I'm not suggesting that you
base the purchase ONLY on one thing but if that's what you're looking
for then that's what you narrow your home search down to.

It depends on your budget... if all you can afford is a 10x10 room then it's
more then enough.

still... 100 sqft is a little off for a basement, unless it's already
finished into small rooms. why bother digging a hole and building up if you
can only get 100sqft out of it. Basement space is usually the cheapest
you'll find in a house.

I don't think you should choose your new house based on the size of your
future Gameroom.I think there are far more important features too
consider. The gameroom being almost last on the list.If you find it that
important after all the other features of the house meet your needs you can
always build an extension that might suit your Gameroom needs even more.Im a
licensed home appraiser and i get to see quite a number of houses that have
all kinds of basements and neat features.I would be more interested in the
condition of the oil burner,Water heater.Kitchen,Wiring/Plumbing.And then
worry where and how to make a nice Gameroom. In that order.Im sure all the
other things like neighborhood,Street,Neighbors,Schools and those things are
obviously more important then the size of your future Gameroom. But to each
his own as they say.Good luck.

Probably 10x12 that's a popular size of an average basement.

I started house shopping a couple years ago, with the top priority
being to have a decent basement for my game room. My wife even agreed
to this as she knows it was very important to me.

Out of all the houses we looked at, we only seriously considered two.
One of them had two huge in-law apartments. The other had only an old
average sized basement with decaying field-stone foundation, low
ceiling, and a river running through the back of it.

Needless to say I ended up buying the house with the less than
satisfactory basement. After you really think it through, the other
factors are certainly important. I hope anyone with as much interest
in having a gameroom that I did doesn't have to face choices like
this.

So now i've got to figure out how to solve the water problems to make
my dreams come true of having a basement arcade. If any one has any
ideas or has dealt with this, please let me know.

I'll make another post about this.

Fortunately my parents are walking distance, and have room to
spare, so my gameroom is down there for now.

I just measured my room, and it is 10 x 12 and I have 8 games, 1 pin, a
megatouch and a small desk with a computer with a little room to spare
if that gives you an idea of what you can fit in there. Everything is
lined up on the walls and there is about 5 feet in the middle between
the games. Not really enough room for a cocktail, but plenty of space
to walk and move about even with people over. Lets face it, most people
collect to have others come over and play as well as for our own
entertainment. As long as you have room to move around, it doesn't
matter how big the room is. Luckily, my wife decided that we never use
the dining room, so off went the furniture and in came the arcade!
Don't feel that you have to have a basement, you can use any room. A
lot of the pics I have seen have been regular bedrooms used as a game
room, which is what I had at first. Having said that, it would be
really nice to have a full basement, the length of a house. It sounds
as if the basement in the house you are buying may be there because the
lot was on a hill or something. I have seen a few older homes that had
a small area, and if it's not an exact square, it might even work out
better, placing the games in a lot of directions.
