Interesting quotes, this interview was conducted in early December with
my commentary.
"... we're positioning the platform for the next decade"
Maybe you should focus more on the next six months.
"... you have to get goods to market anyway you can to make sure you
don't disappoint customers"
That would have been a good idea.
"... we're shipped more [PS3's] into Canada than Nintendo Wii has"
You got Nintendo on that one.
"... the machine that's far and away the best-selling machine on the
market right now is PS2... If you want to talk about best-selling
console, we've already got that done without selling a single unit of
Playstation 3"
(NOTE: Post holiday sales data shows the hand held Nintendo DS was the
leader for the 2006 holiday season in both Japan and the US. The PS2
took second place.... Arrogance just spews out of SCEA)
"... We've invested much greater in PS3 over our inital investment in
PS2, there is a lot more under the hood and it cost us a lot more to
make it, I think it's going to be a lot more difficult for us to cost
reduce this."
You think?
"... We do not expect cost reductions to be as soon or as drastic as
they were for the Playstation 2"
Oh why not? $350 lost at manufacturing, why not drop the PS3 price into
the price bracket of the Nintendo Wii and take an even $500 loss on
every console, hell why not just give PS3s away,
"... We're quite comfortable at the pace we're moving at and the
audience we've carved out for the PSP"
Of course you are, it's nice to invest millions in a niche market
device like the PSP that nobody wants, meanwhile Nintendo walks away
with a mega-hit with the Nintendo DS. Has anyone else observed the
atheisticical similarities between the PS3, PSP and the Nintendo DS and
Wii? It's obvious the design teams consisted of some of the same folk,
humm... I wonder if Wii and PS3 console sales will bear any
similarities. My guess would be yes.
"... [game development] cost have risen greatly... it's difficult for a
publisher to build exclusively for a certain platform.... We've
invested heavily sense going into business at building an internal
software development organization"
So why didn't we have any good launch titles? Why is the best selling
PS3 title Resistance: Fall of Man created by a third-party developer
(Insomniac) and not Sony's first-party publishing division. Again, more
arrogant talk.
