I have the DS... the controls are gammy, the software library is poor, the
mic and touchscreen are pure gimmickry and it's big and ugly - I'd be
embarrassed to play it in public! Actually, I have gripes with the PSP. It's
not even out in Europe and apart from being sleek it's already dated.... 2
hour battery life, 1 minute loading times, grainy home-ripped movies, and
too big to be truly portable.
For the DS, the upside is that it has great graphics and the cart is quite
modern too (though I don';t know why they bothered making the cart so small
when the console itself is the size of a brick).
On the other hand, the new Gameboy is quite cool BUT do we really need
another incarnation of the GBA? I've always thought that although the GBA SP
was much sleeker and smaller than any previous gameboy (apart from the
Gameboy pocket), it was still to large to carry in your pocket and the games
were just average. I don't think there's many GBA titles that would make u
think "wow, these graphics are amazing" (more often they're NES-style rather
than SNES quality) or "the gameplay is truly unique". In fact, if you take
BOTH graphics and gameplay into account, most GBA games can only be
considered average... unless they're SNES ports in which case they're hardly
innovative.
Another gripe I have with GBA games is they are too expensive. For Eur40-50
you get a (usually) 2D game with average graphics, often rushed out on the
back of a movie. On the other hand, a fully-blown PS2 game that could cost
much more to develop and be much more playable can sell for as little as
Eur20. I know many GBA games are also being sold at Eur20 but they are often
still not worth buying.
There really has to be greater functionality before I'd consider buying one.
I know it is small and has a backlit screen and integrated headphones port.
I think it needs a wireless connection, possible some form of online or
mobile phone connectivity, and if it also doubled as a 1gig MP3 player
(surely not too much to ask in this day and age) I'd PROBABLY buy one....
and if they threw in DIVX playback I'd DEFINITELY buy one. But you know
Nintendo and their games-orientation... too bad they don't have a better
market orientation.
