oof. Tolkien's "style", at least as far as LotR goes, was basically
classical epic via Enlightenment high adventure - some parts are obviously
more of one than the other - but it was heavily leavened with a modern
fictional style, especially in terms of dialog. try reading a book written
in actual middle english - it redefines both "quaint" and "opaque" Razz

The more important question is, how many hours of porn do I need to
watch to make my mind feel clean again?

Right. Wha'd I say? Razz

Tolkien's lapses into Old English thees and thous was his version of
High Gothic -
A literary device used to imbue certain passages with quaintness or
gravity.
AFAIK, this was the only part of his 'style' that wasn't 20th century
modern.

IME, people who frown over LotRs 'density' invariably cite 'thous' as
its source.

As for reams of exposition, yes, that's a fault to which all teachers
are heir.
Prof Tolkien did love his subject and got paid by the word like
everyone else.

Books by doctors and lawyers are just as dull, and for all the same
reasons.
Unless you happen to want to be a doctor or a lawyer, then they're
great.
When I read LotR, I wanted to be an adventurer.

It was great.
