Was GURPS the first general rpg or universal rpg?

My user name or nickname for this group is gurpg. It stands for general
universal role-playing game. That way my nickname does not copy GURPS
or the Prism rpg.

No. The first was Basic Role-playing, from Chaosium.

The first *well-developed* "universal" rpg was probably Champions, from
Hero Games. Although it was designed for (and emphasised) superhero
games, the nature of your typical "superhero universe" requires a
universal treatment, since it has to be able to cover magic (of all
types), a vast array of science fiction concepts, modern-day
activities, historic recreations, time travel ... by the time you've
"finished" designing a superhero game, you've designed a whole bunch of
other genre games along the way. (This was explicitly acknowledged
later when Champions evolved into the "Hero System".

Now, I am confused. Which rpg was clearly the first to be general and
universal like in my user name Gurpg that stands for general universal
role-playing game.

Specifically, Steve Jackson's The Fantasy Trip, published by
Metagaming. SJ originally wanted to update The Fantasy Trip, but
ended up having to design a new (though derivative) game when he
couldn't obtain the rights to TFT. GURPS itself was originally
published as a tactical combat system (with character design) called
Man to Man--it was sort of a prequel, with the release of the full
system planned from the very beginning.

Which itself derived from the psuedo RPG's Melee and Wizard.

TFT had a book called Melee and a book called Wizard.
But the names were originally used for two mini-games.
