In GURPS High-Tech, on page 229, it says about airbags:
(...) Someone caught behind an inflated airbag is unable to do
anything until he frees himself; he may attempt one DX-2 roll per turn
to do so. (...)
As I understand airbags, however, they quickly deflate after inflating
and so the above would be a very rare situation for the few cases in
which the airbag fails to deflate (and a bigger worry then is probably
the damage incurred by being whacked into a fully inflated airbag
rather than getting free afterwards).
After a crash in which the airbag operates correctly, I would have
thought it more to the point to have to roll to get out of mental stun
before being able to act again.
Any thoughts on this?
Cheers,
Bent D

Last year I was actually in a crash just bad enough to deploy the
airbags. I never even saw them inflated. It was basically just
WHACK, and I was sitting in a car full of stinky blue smoke with a
limp airbag hanging from the dashboard.
I'd say a roll VS mental stun would be realistic. >> Stay informed about: GURPS High Text and airbags |

Maybe they are referring to the bags like those deployed by the fire
department for people jumping out of a building. Much like the scene in
Lethal Weapon.

I agree. And even if the airbag doesn't deflate immediately, as far as
I know they're not really big enough to trap the person they're
protecting. DX-2 sounds a bit harsh. (Although I've heard American
airbags are bigger because they're designed to save people without
seat belts. No idea if that's really true.)

Even without getting whacked by an airbag, mental stun after a crash
sounds very reasonable to me.

A very powerful tool, but not the only tool. And if only that which

There's a different design of vehicle airbag around, designed to fill
the compartment and press the driver back into his seat in place of a
seatbelt, used in a few cars in the states. They don't deflate, as
they're designed to pin you in place throughout an extended crash rather
than just soften the initial impact.
I'm not even sure if they're still made, quite dangerous as I recall.

I've got to add that I find it somewhat humorous and quite GURPSian
that they actually have a rule for dealing with airbags. >> Stay informed about: GURPS High Text and airbags |
