Greetings dudes and dudettes. I've got some bad news for people wanting
to obtain Massimo's helicopter during the "Calm Before The Storm"
mission on the PS2.
It's my understanding that Rockstar removed all air vehicles from LCS
on the PSP, but left the code that controls them in. A Maverick, VCN
Maverick, Police Maverick, Hunter and Dodo are all available for anyone
using a cheat device. You can't normally get any air vehicles as there
aren't any spawn points for them (The cheat device spawns them inside
one of your own safehouse garages).
The most obvious way to see that the code still exists is during this
mission. It's widely reported that you can ride a PCJ up the stairs and
through the yellow glow and enter Massimo's chopper but the game fails
the mission as you went oo far away.
On to the PS2 version, and I thought it would be the same. It's taken
me a while but I've tried everything I can think of and am fairly
certain that the chopper in the PS2 version cannot be obtained.
1. Usual method doesn't seem to work. The PCJ just can't make it up the
second set of stairs to the roof. Even using the 'perfect handling'
and 'change bike tyre size' cheats don't help (Much).
2. You can actually jump across to part of the rooftop from the stairs
right next to the yellow glow. The mission fails and reports that you
'blew your cover'. This *only* happens on the part of the rooftop
that leads round to where the helicopter is and naturally everything
mission related disappears.
3. Using a car and the 'better handling' cheat, drive a car and tap L3
to jump on to the rooftop. Same thing happens - mission failed.
4. Using a PCJ, simply get there before Massimo lands. Not as hard as
you think but you do have to be careful not to get too far ahead of
him ("You lost him!"). Run up the stairs and turn right. In the
mission this is where Toni would end up if you entered the yellow
glow. It's too far to jump across to the helicopter and the usual
part of the rooftop fails the mission.
5. <This one REALLY gets me> Use the 'blow up all vehicles' cheat. At
Salvatore's mansion, enter the yellow glow to get Massimo to take off
and then speed down the road towards your safehouse. When he's in
sight and/or above you use the cheat to blow the helicopter up (Make
sure you're not on/in a vehicle!). Then push it to your safehouse
anyway you like. A Rhino or Trashmaster is advised, as pushing on
foot is awkward and time consuming. OK, got it in your garage? Run
out to close the door and then....nothing! Rockstar, in their
infinite wisdom have removed the "fix destroyed vehicles in
saefhouse garages" facility. Vehicles that are damaged or on fire
are fixed, destroyed wrecks are not. This makes getting other
special vehicles (Bullet-proofs for example) much more difficult and
some impossible.
The one last thing I'm going to try is to get on the rooftop and stand
near the water tower. I'm hoping that the game won't fail me as I
haven't walked over the "illegal" part of the roof.
Sorry for such a long post, but I know a few of you like exploiting the
game's mechanics to see what makes it tick. Personally I just wanted to
see if the air vehicles coding is still activated, and all R* have done
is make it more difficult (Almost impossible) to get your mitts on this
one.
Cheers,
Rob

Interesting. Didn't even know the target would get out of the helicopter
at all, since in normal gameplay (no cheating) you never get to see this.

I found a way to get into the chopper (on the PSP version - i assume it
works on the PS2 as well). After he lands, take a PCJ onto the nearby
El-train station and follow the tracks along before jumping to the
roof. Nab the chopper and fly off. Unfortunately, when you get too far
away, the mission fails and the chopper disappears, leaving you trying
to float in mid-air, with inevitable results... >> Stay informed about: GTA:LCS PS2 Version - "Calm before The Storm" |

I dismissed that as too far to jump, really wish I'd tried it now!
All my previous efforts have failed. It was my assumption that Rockstar
added a trigger on part of the rooftop to fail you for "blowing your
cover". I never did make it as far as rooftop where the chopper is as a
result.
Very nearly jumped a car up there though, I think it was an Esperanto.
Cheers,
Rob
